Lecture | Sun Gods and the Son of God: ‘Lords’ in New Spain from the Pre-Columbian to the Viceregal Era

The Spanish conquerors believed it was their duty to bring Christianity to the New World. Images of Jesus Christ were first imported, and then created by Spanish and Native artists as part of the evangelizing efforts. This presentation examines indigenous representations of male gods in order to trace the development of ‘Lord’ imagery following the conquest of Mexico in 1521. The Spanish brought the earliest crosses, and by the mid-16th century Nahua (native) artists were carving their own versions mixing Spanish and indigenous visual language. Later in the colonial period, polychromed sculptures of the crucified Christ were popularized as a violent and visceral reminder of sacrifice. These polychromed crucifixes were modeled with indigenous techniques and painted in the Spanish style, illustrating that both Spanish precedents and Native cosmology strongly influenced the creation and development of Christ-centered devotions in colonial Mexico. Preliminary research reveals that they were created with Spanish orthodox Catholicism in mind but were reproduced and reinterpreted by the multi-ethnic members of New Spanish society. A writer in residence in the Library’s Wertheim Study, Elena FitzPatrick Sifford is a PhD candidate and Chancellor’s Fellow in the art history program at the Graduate Center CUNY. Her dissertation is entitled “Disseminating Devotion: Christological Imagery in Viceregal Mexico and Guatemala.” She is also currently researching “The Mass of Saint Gregory: Byzantine Icon, German Print, Mexican Featherwork” for a forthcoming anthology, Toward a Sacramental Methodology of Art History: An Examination of the History of Christianity and the Visual Arts.

A new event which gives casual readers and bookworms alike an excuse to tackle that classic they've just never read. Hosted by Time Out New York's books editor Matthew Love, the free bi-monthly event is part lecture, part book club, part show and part social occasion. Writers or public figures who are passionate about the chosen classic will deliver introductory lectures. The crowd will be divided into groups and given certain aspects of the text to discuss. Actors will put on short, silly scenes which illustrate crucial moments of the plot; musicians or poets will present works based on the work in question. Once the presentations are over, participants will hang around, drink wine, talk about the book at length and offer suggestions for the next novel. The first book will be satiric touchstone Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Concert | Salsa Music: Tito Rojas / Lower East Salsa

Over the past three decades, Tito Rojas has escalated to become one of salsa's biggest singers. With his natural vocal talent, Rojas “uses almost no ornamentation when he sings” and melodically accompanies salsa’s upbeat rhythm. Hailing from Puerto Rico, Rojas started his solo career with his hit song “El Campesino” and went on to become a leading member of several well-known bands, including his own, Conjunto Borincano. Renowned as a top “salsero”, Rojas pursued a solo career in the 1990s with the romantic salsa album Sensual. He reached a new pinnacle in his career when his 1995 album, Por Derecho Propio went double platinum, and he was awarded “Best Salsa Artist” in Puerto Rico. A constant on the Latin music scene, Rojas has “reached the area where pop music turns into art, where signs of emotionalism by the performer bring an entire audience together,” according to The New York Times.
