Lecture | Developing and Deploying Open Source in the Library: Hydra, Blacklight, and Beyond

A brown bag lunch talk with Julie Meloni of the University of Virginia Library. In these trying financial times, libraries and cultural heritage institutions in general face difficult resource allocation decisions: for example, do you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on proprietary software or do you hire a few good software developers and library professionals who can lead the design of applications and platforms specific to your needs? For some, leveraging open source software and the communities that form around it helps solve some of these problems. The University of Virginia Library is a key partner in the collaborative and open source project known as "Hydra”; the goal of the Hydra Project is to create a comprehensive set of open source repository workflow tools that allow librarians and scholars to manage describe, deliver, reuse and preserve digital information. U.Va.’s committment to the project includes the definition of metadata standards, the creation of search and discovery interfaces, and the development and implementation of multiple Hydra “heads” such as the interface and workflow in use for the U.Va. institutional repository. U.Va is also a key contributor to the Blacklight project; Blacklight is an open source discovery interface or "next-generation catalog" — and can be seen powering the newly updated U.Va. OPAC, Virgo. This talk will provide a brief overview of both the Hydra and Blacklight projects and the tools under development, will describe some of the processes and challenges for development teams working within a library setting, and show some of the ways that open source software works (and where it gets tricky) within this setting.

Concert | Nikki Jean, Singer/Songwriter

Nikki Jean is a singer-songwriter, musician, and occasional actress from the United States. Nikki Jean would travel cross--country, working on songs with collaborators who would top any list of the greatest songwriters of all time. The plan was inspired, but also wild and improbable. Who could imagine that a new artist, still in her early 20s, could reach out to a wish list of Hall of Fame songwriters, and that so many would say yes? From April 16, 2008 to August 6, 2008, Nikki Jean was part of the Glow in the Dark Tour with Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna and N.E.R.D.

Screening | Oscar Micheaux's Silent Film Within Our Gates (1920), with a Score by Wycliffe Gordon

Acclaimed jazz trombonist and composer Wycliffe Gordon has composed a 78-minute score to Within Our Gates, a 1920 silent film by Oscar Micheaux, one of the most prolific and innovative African American filmmakers of the early 20th century. The score is performed live by an 18-piece big band to a screening of the film, which depicts racial tensions in America at the time. Gordon picks up the baton and masterfully captures the essence, culture, and historical significance of the film in stunning composition, while seeking to interpret our past, define the present, and imagine the future. Commissioned by Jazzmobile, this project takes the bold leap of re-visioning and reinterpreting aspects of a pivotal work, while at the same time contributing to the expansion of the musical canon.
