Dance Performance | Exit 12 Dance Company, founded by a U.S. Marine, performs Iraqi dance


Exit 12 Dance Company, a contemporary dance company founded by United States Marine Corps Sergeant Roman Baca upon his return from service in Iraq, has been invited to perform in the annual Summer Streets festival of New York City this August. Exit12 Dance Company of Manhattan be will joined by student dancers from Ballet Theatre Company of West Hartford, CT. In April of 2012, Baca returned to Iraq as a civilian artist and ran a Dancing to Connect program with young men and women from Kirkuk and Erbil, supported by a grant from the US Embassy Baghdad and ably supported on the ground by local partners. Jonathan Hollander of Battery Dance Company organized this program with Emad Salem supported by a fellowship from The Mission Continues.

About 9 miles total walking. Spend about 3 hours on the island, first touring Fort Jay and Castle Williams and then walking the island and viewing the Jazz Picnic. Break for lunch on the island; bring your lunch or try the food trucks. About 5 miles total walking on the island. Then, take another (free) ferry from Governor's Island to Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and walk along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 1, walk under the Brooklyn Bridge and past Jane's Carousel, then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan, ending at City Hall Park. About 4 miles total walking from the ferry to City Hall.

Terra Firma Dance Theatre – Stuart Loungway, the Artistic Director of Terra Firma Dance Theatre, began his training with Tania Lichine, Irina Jacobson, and John Clifford before receiving a full scholarship to the prestigious School of American Ballet. He began his professional career performing with the Joffrey II Ensemble and Joffrey Ballet, before joining San Francisco Ballet Company and continuing as a Principal Dancer with American Repertory Ballet. 10 Hairy Legs – 10 Hairy Legs is a repertory company –comprised entirely of men – of Randy James’ work as well as existing and new works by significant choreographers. Devonté (Dev) Hynes is a producer, songwriter, and artist currently based in New York City. He has written and produced songs for a wide range of artists including Solange Knowles, the Chemical Brothers, Florence and the Machine and Sky Ferreira. Dev also writes music under the moniker of Blood Orange, and has released two albums, titled Coastal Grooves and Cupid Deluxe, on Domino Recording Co. Sean Nicholas Savage is a Canadian singer and ballad composer.
