Concert | Nowhere: Pianist Performs 12 Hours a Day for 14 Consecutive Days

For fourteen consecutive days, twelve hours a day, pianist Marino Formenti will perform at the venue -- where he will also live in a space that is mercilessly both public and private. We invite you to come and go freely, to listen to music in a different dimension, with Formenti playing the piano daily, from morning to night. With round-the-clock live streaming, you can also experience and share his days at a distance. Nowhere is a non-place in the middle of the city. Marino Formenti performs, eats, sleeps, and lives all in the same space -- a metaphorical, silent, musical 'glass house' that is also surrounded and on view by the daily life of the city. In a performance about music, time, and togetherness, Formenti questions any and all divisions between performance and life. Days become music. Come and stay, leave and come back, listen or ignore the pianist, sleep, read, write, draw, lie down -- to experience music, time, and togetherness in another way. August 14-28, 2019

Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Sex Crimes / Magic Time!—Art & Ephemera of the Caffé Cino

Sex Crimes provides artwork and literature with homosexual content that was often created in a shadow world of criminality, organized crime payoffs, and under the threat of arrest. These pieces, aimed primarily at gay men, were often passed surreptitiously from person to person. Producers of the artworks faced imprisonment and harassment if they were caught. Magic Time!—Art & Ephemera of the Caffé Cino -- In 1958 at the age of 26, Joe Cino opened a coffeehouse at 31 Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village. Soon Cino started to allow the production of small, avant-garde theatre productions in the venue. Caffé Cino would serve as one of the earliest safe spaces for gay artists to perform their plays, songs, and poetry, despite the illegality of depicting homosexuality on the stage at the time. By paying off both the local organized crime racket as well as the NYPD, Joe Cino was able to create a radical environment where the New York underground took root.

An exhibition by the thirty-one artists who are participating in Open Sessions, a two-year program that provides opportunities for selected artists from around the world to contextualize their work in terms of drawing through conversation, public programs, and exhibitions. Featuring new drawings and drawing adjacent works by a diverse and international group of artists who come from myriad perspectives and geographic locations ranging from the Americas to Africa, Asia and the Middle East, What's Love Got to Do With It? takes as its theme, the universal discourse of love, which, the curators contend, is as democratic as drawing is. Translations of the drawing medium in video, performance, three-dimensional notation and non-conventional mark-making, the works in What’s Love Got to Do with It? celebrate drawing with irreverence and wit. And most definitely with love.

Author Reading | When the Plums Are Ripe: Forced to Fight

In Cameroon, plum season is a highly anticipated time of year. But for the narrator of When the Plums Are Ripe, the poet Pouka, the season reminds him of the “time when our country had discovered the root not so much of its own violence as that of the world’s own, and, in response, had thrown its sons who at that time were called Senegalese infantrymen into the desert, just as in the evenings the sellers throw all their still-unsold plums into the embers.” In this novel of radiant lyricism, Patrice Nganang recounts the story of Cameroon’s forced entry into World War II, and in the process complicates our own understanding of that globe-spanning conflict.

Concert | Grammy-Nominated Blues Musician and Songwriter

Grammy-nominated blues musician and songwriter Cedric Burnside--a descendant of blues royalty--continues the rich tradition of Mississippi Hill Country, imbuing the genre with modern-day sensibilities and a biting timeless flavor. Burnside has both played and recorded with North Mississippi Allstars, Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and is now embarking on a tour with collaborator and Pimps of Joytime bandleader Brian Jay. For this very special appearance at the Atrium, Burnside brings his stinging guitar licks, raw, cutting rhythms, and soul-baring vocals to a blues set that will enthrall a new generation of listeners.

Performance | Blood Fountain: The Endless Consequences of HIV/AIDS

A feverish choral arrangement of amplified voices emanates from a sculpture not of marble, but of flowing red water. In A.R.M.’s anti-monument, non-memorial performance Blood Fountain, vocalists interconnected by fetish gear, sports equipment, and medical supplies harmonize queer club hits to unearth queer history, to make us remember the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis. With ritual, pageantry, improvisation, and free association, Blood Fountain depicts the endless consequences of HIV/AIDS within individual queer bodies and on queer communities.
