Concert | Nowhere: Pianist Performs 12 Hours a Day for 14 Consecutive Days

For fourteen consecutive days, twelve hours a day, pianist Marino Formenti will perform at the venue -- where he will also live in a space that is mercilessly both public and private. We invite you to come and go freely, to listen to music in a different dimension, with Formenti playing the piano daily, from morning to night. With round-the-clock live streaming, you can also experience and share his days at a distance. Nowhere is a non-place in the middle of the city. Marino Formenti performs, eats, sleeps, and lives all in the same space -- a metaphorical, silent, musical 'glass house' that is also surrounded and on view by the daily life of the city. In a performance about music, time, and togetherness, Formenti questions any and all divisions between performance and life. Days become music. Come and stay, leave and come back, listen or ignore the pianist, sleep, read, write, draw, lie down -- to experience music, time, and togetherness in another way. August 14-28, 2019

Over the course of two evenings, The Polis Project and Warscapes magazine will host conversations on current imperialist interventions across Africa, their connections to militarized policing and surveillance in the United States, the wave of political uprisings on the continent, with a focus on recent movements in Algeria and Sudan, and the importance of transnational solidarities in the face of repression at home and abroad. -- Corinna Mullin is visiting professor of international relations and adjunct professor of political science at John Jay College in New York City. -- Samar Al-Bulushi is a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Professor (beginning Fall 2019) in the Department of Anthropology at UC Irvine. -- Nisrin Elamin Adbelrahman is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Stanford University whose research focuses on the ways Gulf corporate investments in land are reshaping quotidian social relations between landless and landholding stakeholders in the Gezira region of central Sudan. -- Brahim Rouabah is a PhD student at the Graduate Center, CUNY, whose research focuses on non-Western political theory in African and West Asia.

Poetry Reading | New Poetry: My Oceanography / A Life Replaced

Like #metoo furies on fire," (Tupelo Quaterly) Harriet Levin's My Oceanography plunges into psychic depths to confront desire, envy, and loss. The life and work of post-minimalist sculptor Eva Hesse serves as a starting point, yet these poems' borders extend far beyond ekphrasis in their imaginative renderings of Hesse’s life against the demands of her art.  Olga Livshin's poems are braided with her translations in A Life Replaced, published this summer by Poets & Traitors Press. Maggie Smith, Rosanna Warren, Nomi Stone, and Ellen Litman praise the "ecstatic voices" of her translations, the "wit, sorrow, and fury" of her poems, and the "sensuous, funny, and dark" talent of the collection as a whole. Ilya Kaminsky has provided the foreword to this hybrid book that reanimates the category.
