Thanks to its varied habitats and combination of native and introduced species, this world-famous park overflows with wild food. Thickets will still be lined with sweet, juicy European cut-leaf blackberries. There is a peach tree growing near the lake, where someone had once tossed a peach pit. These sweet, juicy peaches are way better than commercial peaches, which have been bred for shelf life, not flavor. This is also the season for black cherries. Cornelian cherries and heritage apples are very tasty and abundant. Wild greens also thrive in meadows and along trail edges. You'll find purslane, lamb's-quarters (a wild spinach), wood sorrel, sheep sorrel, poor man's pepper, lady's thumb, and Asiatic dayflower. There will be culinary and medicinal herbs such as epazote, wild bay leaves, field garlic, sassafras, and common spicebush leaves as well as gourmet wild mushrooms. The tour will last for about 4 hours.
