Book Discussion | James Baldwin: Living in Fire (online)

Mark the centennial of James Baldwin’s birth by joining us for a presentation by Baldwin scholar Bill Mullen as he discusses Baldwin’s time in Greenwich Village. James Baldwin is an icon of liberation who created some of his time's most important literary works, including the novels Go Tell It on the Mountain and If Beale Street Could Talk. Bill Mullen celebrates the life of this great African-American writer and activist in his book James Baldwin: Living in Fire. As a lifelong anti-imperialist, black queer advocate, and feminist, James Baldwin was a passionate chronicler of the rise of the Civil Rights Movement, the US war against Vietnam, the Palestinian liberation struggle, and the rise of LGBTQ+ rights. Mullen pays homage to Baldwin's radical approach to life, writing, and activism. Constantly struggling for an anti-racist, emancipated world, Baldwin's philosophy and politics were ahead of their time, predicting many of today's movements such as Black Lives Matter. Author Bill Mullen is a Professor of American Studies at Purdue University.

Lecture | The History of Antisemitism: Expulsion of Jews from England (online)

In 1290, Jews were expelled from England and subsequently largely expunged from English historical memory. Yet for two centuries they occupied important roles in medieval English society. Protected by the Crown and granted the exclusive right to loan money with interest, Jews financed building projects, provided loans to students, and bought and rented out housing. Historical texts showed that they shared meals and beer, celebrated at weddings, and sometimes even had romantic relationships with Christians. However, Church authorities feared the consequences of Jewish contact with Christians and tried to limit it. Royal protection also proved to be a double-edged sword: when revolts broke out against the unpopular king Henry III, some of the rebels, in debt to Jewish creditors, killed Jews and destroyed loan records. Vicious rumors circulated that Jews secretly plotted against Christians and crucified Christian children. All of these factors led Edward I to expel the Jews from England. John Tolan's book England's Jews revisits this neglected chapter of English history and shows that thirteenth-century England was both the theater of fruitful interreligious exchange and a crucible of European antisemitism. Speaker John Tolan is a historian interested in the entangled lives of Jews, Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages and beyond. He has taught in universities in North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East; he is currently emeritus professor of History at the University of Nantes (France) and member of the Academia Europa.

Book Discussion | Massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane: Nazi Gold and the Murder of an Entire French Town by SS Division Das Reich (online)

The massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane on June 10, 1944, is recognized yearly throughout France with the same profundity as the attacks on Pearl Harbor and the Twin Towers in the United States. The Oradour Massacre is taught in school in France and the anniversary is commemorated every year. Today, Oradour is a destination for people interested in one of the most horrific events in French history. Each year, the devastated village attracts over 300,000 visitors worldwide. On June 8, 1944, 15,000 men and 209 tanks and self-propelled guns of the Das Reich 2 Panzer Division rolled out of Montauban in southern France and began an ordered 450-mile march that ended at Normandy more than two weeks later. While in Montauban, a battalion from Das Reich surrounded Oradour-sur-Glane, massacred 642 men, women, and children, and razed the village to the ground. Das Reich became one of the most dreadful legends in the history of France and World War II. Vincent dePaul Lupiano's book is the story of the Oradour massacre and its real cause: how two SS officers—a general and a major—“acquired” one million dollars’ worth of gold ingots while encamped at nearby Montauban, and how that led to the massacre in 1944.
