Book Club | Poetry discussion: John Keats

For this discussion, the group will be reading John Keats's abandoned epic poem Hyperion: A Fragment. Hyperion, a Fragment is an abandoned epic poem by 19th-century English Romantic poet John Keats. It was published in Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems. It is based on the Titanomachia (aka War of the Titans, Battle of the Titans, Battle of the Gods) and tells of the despair of the Titans after their fall to the Olympians. Keats wrote the poem from late 1818 until the spring of 1819. The poem stops abruptly in the middle of the third book, with close to 900 lines having been completed. He gave it up as having "too many Miltonic inversions." He was also nursing his younger brother Tom, who died in December 1818 of tuberculosis. Keats picked up the ideas again in his unfinished poem The Fall of Hyperion: A Dream published after his death. He attempted to recast the epic by framing it with a personal quest to find truth and understanding. These poems were Keats' final attempt to reconcile his perceived conflict between mortal decay and absolute value. John Keats (1795-1821) was an English poet of the second generation of Romantic poets, along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. His poems had been in publication for less than four years when he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. They were indifferently received in his lifetime, but his fame grew rapidly after his death. By the end of the century, he was placed in the canon of English literature. Keats had a style "heavily loaded with sensualities," notably in the series of odes. Typical of the Romantics, he accentuated extreme emotion through natural imagery

Discussion | Avant-Garde Psychiatry and the Birth of Art Brut

Why do we feel called to create art? What does art accomplish? Is the clarity of creation a way back to mental health? For the groundbreaking Catalan psychiatrist Francesc Tosquelles, art, labor, and psychotherapy all constituted a cohesive form of work, through which a person who had lost the experience of reality or self could begin to reconstitute these mental frameworks. With this conceptual framework in mind, artist Conor Gannon, in conjunction with psychiatrist Dr. Christopher Landry, led a 9-week mixed-media workshop for the gallery community. Painters, sculptors, musicians and writers met for nine weeks, alternating between art creation and discussion, to develop their accounts of the value of creative expression in the context of mental illness and recovery. Artists will be alongside Edward Dioguardi, co-curator of Francesc Tosquelles: Avant-Garde Psychiatry and the Birth of Art Brut at the American Folk Art Museum for a panel discussion about art's relationship to mental illness and recovery.

Book Club | Never by Ken Follett

“Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn’t get fixed.” So says Pauline Green, president of the United States, in Follett’s nerve-racking drama of international tension. A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert; a stolen US Army drone; an uninhabited Japanese island; and one country’s secret stash of deadly chemical poisons: all these play roles in a relentlessly escalating crisis. Struggling to prevent the outbreak of world war are a young woman intelligence officer; a spy working undercover with jihadists; a brilliant Chinese spymaster; and Pauline herself, beleaguered by a populist rival for the next president election. Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding read that transports readers to the brink of the unimaginable.

Book Discussion | The New York Game: Baseball and the Rise of a New City

Baseball is “the New York game” because New York is where the diamond was first laid out, where the bunt and the curveball were invented, and where the home run was hit. It’s where the game’s first stars were born, and where everyone came to play or watch the game. With nuance and depth, historian Kevin Baker brings this all vividly back to life: the still-controversial, indelible moments—Did the Babe call his shot? Was Merkle out? Did they fix the 1919 World Series? Here are all the legendary players, managers, and owners, in all their vivid, complicated humanity, on and off the field.

Concert | Electroacoustic Music with Sounds of Nature

Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place, an iterative soundscape composition, combines an electroacoustic performance with field recordings of glacial geologic activity and oceanographic data Mary Edwards gathered while on an art and science sailing expedition on a research vessel above the 78th parallel in Svalbard. This ode rather than an elegy to the transforming Arctic based on eyewitness accounts of natural events—iceberg torrents, calving glaciers, whale song and converging subterranean rivers—is sonically recreated as a score with intention of “decentralizing the centered and un-othering the others.”

Book Discussion | Let Me Try Again: A Romantic Tragicomedy

Ross, twenty-three, isn’t nearly as clever as he thinks he is. His brilliant idea to break up with his girlfriend, Lora Liamant, in an attempt to show her how terrible other men are and how empty life would be without him, has backfired spectacularly. Within weeks, he discovers she’s moved on with the brother of a famous network TV actor. In the midst of his heartbreak, Ross’s parents die tragically—in a helicopter crash at an all-inclusive resort in Turks and Caicos—leaving him with millions of dollars and custody over his teenage sister. Traumatized, ruminating, and rich, Ross plots scheme after scheme to show Lora he’s changed into a responsible adult, even as she shows no indication of wanting that. Everything he does seems to make matters worse, as his misguided mission of self-transformation only leads to Lora’s confusion and dismay. Let Me Try Again is an electric picaresque charting a young Jewish man’s spiral of neurotic pride and self-improvement within a culture that only caters to his worst impulses. Brimming with vitality and crackling with wit, Matthew Davis’s dynamic debut illuminates the absurdities of twenty-first-century life with ecstatic flair.

Staged Reading | The Judge and His Daughter: Ideology vs Family

A fictional conservative Supreme Court justice whisks away his environmental-radicalist 16-year-old daughter to a camp in the Adirondacks when she is suspended for destroying her school’s air conditioning system with a sledgehammer. As they will be living in the wilderness together until she "learns to behave," they submit to the family psychologist’s rules designed to help them get along: He can’t talk about God or banish her to her room. She can’t blame him for everything and has to relinquish her phone. The plan works; the two are starting to enjoy each other’s company, fishing, hunting, searching for an elusive moose, and discussing the Supreme Court docket. But, when the daughter discovers her father's ulterior motive for bringing her to the camp, the Judge is faced with the hardest decision of his life: does he sacrifice his ideological beliefs for the sake of his family? Written by Ruth Apolonia Zamoyta.

Concert | Joyful Blending of Jazz, Soul and Traditional African Sounds - in the Park

Ajoyo is the vision of multi-reed player Yacine Boular?s, a mystic brew blending African tradition, jazz and soul. More than music, it's a joyful ceremony, a fuller experience bringing musicians and audience closer together. Ajoyo chants in the name of Tony Allen, Oum Khalsoum, Charlie Parker, and Donnie Hathaway, stomps towards you in the eye of the dancer, arms open, horns, bell and bass interwoven like the fabric of a ceremonial dress, and speaks the language of the talking drum with a New York accent. Originally from Tunisia in North Africa (by way of Paris), Boular?s has played sax, composed and arranged music for Cameroonian musicians such as former Fela Kuti drummer Jojo Kuo, the late Martino Atangana, Haitian Kompa legends Tabou Combo, and Placido Domingo's album Encanto Del Mar.
