Jazz | Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in the Park

The Grammy-winning Christian McBride Big Band brings the celebrated bassist and bandleader's take on the sprawling ensembles that dominated jazz in the early 1940s at the height of swing. McBride explores several extensions of his creative inspiration through various ensembles; this 17-piece iteration helped define a new big band sound that fuses traditional long-form compositions with more modern post-bop sound. Their latest, 2020's For Jimmy, Wes, and Oliver, saw McBride and organist Joey DeFrancesco explore their shared love for the Jimmy Smith/Wes Montgomery collaborations of the late '60s. This concert will feature pieces from that album as well as others from the Christian McBride Big Band. They're joined by Wallace Roney Jr, a trumpeter who's shared the stage with the likes of Chick Corea, Ornette Coleman, and Jimmy Heath, and carries the pedigree of his Grammy-winning father Wallace Roney (a mentee of Miles Davis).
