Opening Reception | 2 Exhibitions: The Women of the Hispanic Society / Píntame Angelitos Negros

The exhibition presented here introduces the history of the many women who worked at the Hispanic Society of America from 1918 to the late 1970s. Group photos and portraits of the female staff, together with their biographies and personal testimonies, tell the story of what it was like to work at the Hispanic Society. Most of these women began their careers as librarians, and many of them went on to become curators and experts in the art or literature of a culture that was initially unfamiliar to them. Their achievements were in great part driven by the founder of the Society, Archer M. Huntington, who was in many ways responsible for changing the lives and expectations of many of these women. This installation, “Píntame Angelitos Negros” is inspired by the poem of the same name written by the Venezuelan poet Andrés Eloy Blanco, made famous by Mexican singer Pedro Infante. Deler grew up listening to his records, which her dad frequently played on his record player. She immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic as a baby, and growing up, she did not feel Dominican or American. Listening to this song as a child made her aware that she was not alone in questioning where she was in this American life. This installation will consist of 999 white ceramic angels and a single black ceramic angel, all evenly spaced and attached by wire to the gate.

Book Discussion | The United States Governed by Six Hundred Thousand Despots: A True Story of Slavery

For one hundred and sixty-nine years, a first-person slave narrative written by John Swanson Jacobs—brother of Harriet Jacobs—was buried in a pile of newspapers in Australia. Jacobs’s long-lost narrative, The United States Governed by Six Hundred Thousand Despots, is a startling and revolutionary discovery. A document like this—written by an ex-slave and ex-American, in language charged with all that can be said about America outside America, untampered with and unedited by white abolitionists—has never been seen before. A radical abolitionist, sailor, and miner, John Jacobs has a life story that is as global as it is American. Born into slavery, by 1855, he had fled both the South and the United States altogether, becoming a stateless citizen of the world and its waters. That year, he published his life story in an Australian newspaper, far from American power and its threats. Unsentimental and unapologetic, Jacobs radically denounced slavery and the state, calling out politicians and slaveowners by their names, critiquing America’s founding documents, and indicting all citizens who maintained the racist and intolerable status quo.

Screening | Metropolitan Opera in HD: Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking (outdoors)

Acclaimed director Ivo van Hove directs the company premiere of American composer Jake Heggie's powerful work Dead Man Walking. Based on Sister Helen Prejean's memoir about her fight for the soul of a condemned murderer, the opera matches the high drama of its subject with Heggie's poignant music and a libretto by Tony and Emmy Award-winner Terrence McNally. Met Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin takes the podium, with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato starring as Sister Helen. The cast also features bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the death-row inmate Joseph De Rocher, soprano Latonia Moore as Sister Rose, and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham--who sang Helen Prejean in the opera's 2000 premiere--as De Rocher's mother. This performance is from October 21, 2023.

Book Discussion | Nightstalkers: The Wright Project and the 868th Bomb Squadron in World War II (online)

In August 1943, a highly classified US Army Air Force unit, code-named the “Wright Project,” departed Langley Field for Guadalcanal in the South Pacific to join the fight against the Empire of Japan. Operating independently, under sealed orders drafted at the highest levels of Army Air Force, the Wright Project was unique, both in terms of the war-fighting capabilities provided by classified systems the ten B-24 Liberators of this small group of airmen brought to the war, and in the success these “crash-built” technologies allowed. The Wright airmen would fly only at night, usually as lone hunters of enemy ships. In so doing they would pave the way for the United States to enter and dominate a new dimension of war in the air for generations to come. With author Richard Lawless.
