Opening Reception | Four Exhibitions: The Rhythm of Color / The Persistence of Form / The Color of Transformation / Metamorphosis

A four-part collective exhibition. The Rhythm of Color displays the expressive central role that an artist’s palette plays in the creation of a painting. Crafting their personal inspirations in a variety of styles, this exhibition features a collection of painters that are united in their understanding of the intimate relationship between color and emotion. Persistence of Form daringly explores the experience of our modern world through the eyes of the artist. Beautifully crafted imagery abounds in this choice selection of paintings as the artists inject wit, fantasy, and sensitivity into their vision of humanity. The works are raw and physical, daring to examine inwardly while holding an unadulterated mirror to the world to expose both the ills and the joys to be found. Color of Transformation is a wonderfully diverse grouping of contemporary painters working at the forefront of their medium. With an adept eye for form, the featured artists swathe their imagery in wonderfully rich colors to maximize both visual and emotional reactions. With influences ranging from music to the natural world, visitors will enjoy exploring and interpreting the messages so brilliantly expressed through the power of color. Exhibiting a wide range of contemporary art, Metamorphosis dives into a vast cauldron of fiery inspiration. We see the humanness behind the form, we find joys, fears, intrigue, and power. There is an expanse of inventive styles, as elemental forms and dynamic figures transform the desire for understanding into action, in the same manner of the early explorers. To make the unknown, known: to see what lies over that horizon. Featured Artists: Renata Cebular, Ciceros, Álvaro Cuartango, Patrick Girod, Anduin Vaid, Melissa G. Watt, Sher Christopher, Meredith Collins, Jim Lively, Coco Masuda, John Nieman, Vera Puig, Annie Seddon, Sibylle, Mats Andersson, István Csizmadia, Sunil Howlader, Kristo (Christian Nicolas), Doug Simon, Fabrizio Andriani, Chritch, Emin Guliyev, Joo Han, Michael Indorato, Michael Indorato, Brian Reed, Marina Reiter, and Jane Sandes.

Opening Reception | If You See Something....

The installation entitled "If You See Something” by Radim Labuda is composed of video material collected while the artist stayed at ISCP residency in New York in the fall of 2009. Videos by Radim Labuda are based on observations of the most everyday subjects: tourists in Times Square, lifeguards at the beach or lobsters in a tank in a shop. These fragmentary images have a surprising potential for triggering unexpected narrative lines, sparking viewer's associations and challenging us to reconsider the way we look at the daily life around us.

Lecture | Markets, State and Democracy: Lessons from the Economic Crisis

The libertarian model asserts that heavy state intervention in the economy is a threat to human liberty. But the recent history of market-based democracies has shown almost the reverse. The supposedly “small-state” model of the US has instead opened the door to massive inequalities of income, wealth and power. The state has not taken over business; alas, business has taken over the state. Considering the recent experiences of the US, Scandinavia, and other market-based economies, how should we re-conceptualize the balance of state, market, and democracy? With: Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University.

Opening Reception | Photography: Christopher Thomas' New York Sleeps

Treading in the footsteps of Charles Marville, Brassaï, and Atget, German photographer Thomas creates large-scale black and white images of cities in a state of repose, as if only the viewer's gaze could animate these empty streets. After years of photographing his native Munich, Thomas turned his camera on his adopted city, New York. The resulting exhibition of 30 nighttime landscapes feels both nostalgic and contemporary, offering an elusive glimpse of 19th century tranquility while hinting at a cryptic apocalyptic ending just around the bend. Born in Germany in 1961, Thomas has worked for magazines such as Geo, Stern, Merian, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin. He has produced numerous photo essays and received international awards for commercial and fine art photography. He lives and works in Munich and New York.

Lecture | The Rise and Fall of Old Europe

'Old Europe' refers to a cycle of Copper Age cultures in southeastern Europe that rose to a surprising level of complexity between about 5000-3500 BC and then collapsed. The astonishing art, solidly built towns and villages, and female-centered domestic cults that defined Old Europe disappeared. The decline of Old Europe is poorly understood and hotly debated. This lecture reviews competing theories of the collapse and suggests that pastoral herding societies from the arid steppes of Ukraine might have played a significant role by destabilizing the agricultural economies of Old European towns.,/br> David Anthony lectures. Anthony is Professor of Anthropology at Hartwick College.

Concert | catchy, acoustic songs mixing humorous social commentary and melancholy reflection

David W. Jacobsen performs catchy, acoustic songs mixing humorous social commentary and melancholy reflection. His live shows are funny without being a simple novelty act, and his ability to laugh at life’s difficulties makes his music cathartic. His most recent album, Walking Away From Wonderland has an alt-folk bent with both serious and more quirky numbers. Many of the songs deal with losing touch as the years go by with friends, lovers, and yourself. Some of the loss is humorously described in the form of break up songs where the narrator is happy the other person is gone. Others express longing for people, places, and times that are forever out of reach. However, not all of the songs adhere to this central theme and the album's content and mood vary considerably.
