Lecture | The Pesach Rubenstein Murder Trial

A lecture with historian Eddy Portnoy on the sensational murder trial of Jewish immigrant Pesach Rubenstein. In December 1875, Rubenstein pleaded not guilty. Sentenced to hang, he starved himself to death in jail. Though the trial made the headline of every major American newspaper the Jewish community adopted an "ostrich mentality" and barely covered it. Portnoy discusses the diverging response of the Jewish and general communities and why the Rubenstein trial continues to be taboo subject matter today.

Gallery Talk | Tour of Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future Exhibition

Join curator Donald Albrecht for a tour of the first retrospective of this architect's career, which was one of the most prolific, unorthodox, and controversial in the history of 20th-century architecture. From the TWA Terminal at JFK Airport and the St. Louis Gateway Arch to the Pedestal Chair for Knoll Associates, Saarinen (1910-1961) created some of the most potent expressions of American identity after World War II. Saarinen’s clients constituted a who's who of the era's most prominent industries and institutions. Featuring sketches, working drawings, models, photographs, furnishings, films, and other ephemera, the exhibition examines the architect's career from the 1930s through the early 1960s.

Book Discussion | Fatima Mernissi's Scheherazade Goes West: Europe and the Muslim World

The Feminist Book Club reads and discusses this unclassifiable book, at turns scholarly, playful, watchful, and admonitory, perfectly juxtaposes the relations between men and women in Europe with those in the Muslim world. There is a studied casualness in Mernissi's observations, which she presents as a series of discoveries reached through conversations with friends, through reading and travels, and through her own lived experience as a liberated Moroccan woman, a feminist professor of sociology at a Moroccan university.

Author Reading | Authors of The Faith Club speak

A program by the authors of The Faith Club, a book written in the wake of September 11th about the attempt to bring people together in their communities to discuss their different religious traditions. The group consists of Ranya Idliby, a Palestinian Muslim, Suzanne Oliver, an ex-Catholic now Episcopalian, and Priscilla Warner, who is Jewish. Their original idea was to form a faith club so they could explain their religious beliefs to their children. In the process of trying to write a book for young people, they realized they first had to write a book for adults about their soul-searching and enlightening dialogues. The three authors have spoken around the country – including for audiences in Oklahoma City, the National Cathedral, and the U.S. State Department.
