Discussion | Genesis — Creation and Creativity

Perhaps no biblical text has more resonance than the story of God’s creation of the world in six days, as recounted in Genesis. The five artists featured in our new exhibition, In the Beginning, were invited to respond to this seminal text. Far from illustrating Genesis, the artists use it as a jumping-off point to contemplate contemporary themes— among them originality, creation, and what it means to play God. Inspirational, mesmerizing, and provocative, their cutting-edge works lead in many directions, from the Big Bang to Kabbalah to cyberspace.,/br> Please join us for a lively discussion with the artists. Preceded by an exhibition tour at 6:00 pm. Participating artists: Alan Berliner, Matthew Ritchie, Ben Rubin, Shirley Shor, and Mierle Laderman Ukeles. Winner of the 2009 National Book Award, Let the Great World Spin is McCann’s most ambitious novel yet; a dazzlingly rich vision of the pain, loveliness, mystery, and promise of New York City in the 1970s. Elegantly weaving together seemingly disparate lives, McCann’s powerful allegory comes alive in the unforgettable voices of the city’s people, unexpectedly drawn together by hope, beauty, and the “artistic crime of the century.”

Screening | Peruvian Comedy: Renzo Zanelli Barreto's The Gardener’s Dog (2009)

The story of Brus, an indigenous artist, and his efforts to organize his community against an American oil company, Kenny Oil. Searching for answers, Brus joins a local NGO, finding himself entangled in the subversive work of an American researcher, Angie. As Brus explores the surreal world of volunteers and development experts, he ultimately discovers his own way of bringing strength to his community. The film is the result of a 3-month long workshop in the Peruvian Amazon of Madre de Dios where activists from the Harakmbut, Bora, and Yanesha communities lived and worked alongside a band of international volunteers ranging from Spain, Nicaragua, the US and Australia. Without a script or professional acting training, this dedicated cooperative created improvisational scenes around social and environmental themes that ultimately amounted to the first ever feature film about oil extraction on native lands in Peru. The screening will be followed by a special talk with director Barreto, producer Annika Beaulieu, and film start/indigenous rights’ activist Brus Rubio Churay.
