Explore ancient Egyptian art from a slightly new perspective. Egyptians respected the divinity of every element of the human body and paid careful attention to its depictions. The fragments of sculpture and relief which have come down to us through the ages can reveal significant insights into the art and beliefs of ancient Egypt. The lecture will also examine details of the manufacture of wooden sculpture and composite statues, shed light upon specifics of symbolism of certain body parts, and explore the magnificence of ancient Egyptian craftsmanship. With speaker Yekaterina Barbash, curator of Ancient Egyptian Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The talk is in conjunction with the current exhibition of the same title now on display.

Book Signing | Photographer Jessica Craig-Martin signs copies of her book Privilege

Craig-Martin became famous for her photographs of high society, capturing awkward and often not-so-glamorous exchanges between the beau monde. Identities of the rich and famous were usually obscured, cropped to show only a garish detail, a midsection, or a hand reaching for a tray of hors d'oeuvres. A favorite at Vogue and Vanity Fair, Craig-Martin has since widened her range to include reportage, fashion, and still life. She has fostered a unique point-of-view that has led to solo shows at P.S.1/MoMA and Collette.

Screening | LOOK HERE! A Portrait of Sylvia Sleigh

Film screening and discussion with artist Sylvia Sleigh and filmmaker and actress Paula Ewin. Moderated by Kathryn McFadden. Like so many of her realist portraits, artist Sylvia Sleigh is larger than life. An integral figure of the feminist art movement of the 1960's-70's, her paintings address issues of sexism and artistic identity. With controversial studies of languid male nudes (often using art critics as models), she confronted head-on the traditional perception of woman-as-muse in the arts, and celebrated the power of the woman-as-artist.
