Lecture | Southern Buddhism: Tracing Later Buddhist Art in South India

A talk by John Guy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It appears self evident to anyone today traveling around Tamil Nadu or southern Karnataka that Buddhism had largely disappeared from the region by the early Chola period, with the well-noted exception of Nagapattinam. This perception is strengthened by the overwhelmingly Hindu character of South Indian society. Conventional histories recount that Buddhism was a significant player alongside Hinduism and Jainism in the religious life of southern India, from the early centuries BC through to at least the fifth or sixth century AD, after which its patronage base dramatically diminished, the faith effectively disappearing by the end of the first millennium. This scenario fails to acknowledge the ways in which Buddhism persisted for nearly another thousand years, retaining followers in southern India and attracting others from abroad. Nor does it recognize the issue of ongoing patronage by the Buddhist community, whose role must have continued to be central in the commissioning and financing of the number of high quality Buddha, Bodhisattva and Tara images in the region. This lecture will explore ways of explaining the existence of these post-Chola Buddhist icons in an apparently non-Buddhist religious environment.

Lecture | Sacred Languages in Judaism, Christianity and Islam

With Ronald J. Brown, Associate Professor, Touro College and Unification Theological Seminary. From "Mumbo Jumbo" to "Open Sesame" and from "Say the magic word" to "Hocus Pocus," humans have long recognized that words and languages have a power beyond their simple rational meanings. Orthodox Jews worship and study scriptures in only in the sacred language Hebrew and the Kabala attributes mystical meaning to words, their numerical value, and physical form. Even Reform Jews are returning to worship in Hebrew. Catholics worshipped in Latin, Russian Orthodox in Old Church Slavonic, and Ethiopians still worship in Ge’ez. Muslims must pray and worship in the sacred language of revelation, Arabic, and argue that god does not hear prayers in any other language. Such worship does not pass through the rational mind but through a spiritual sense.

A screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Lisa Biagiotti, and complimentary beer and wine. Discussion and Q&A after the film will be led by filmmaker Lisa Biagiotti, an independent, multimedia journalist who has worked for PBS and Current TV. She has recently reported on the sanitation crisis in South East Asia and HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean and the American South. In 2009, Lisa was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for the videos she produced on the humanitarian crisis in eastern Congo.
