Birdwatching | 111th Annual Christmas Bird Count in the Park


Teams of birdwatchers young and old will spend the morning canvassing all 843 acres of the Park, recording the number and species of birds they observe during this popular annual tradition of ornithological “I Spy.” At 12:30 p.m., Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe will greet the bird counters and launch the data tally. Bird counters will then have the opportunity to discuss bird findings and share anecdotes.

Theater | Dzieci Theatre presents Fools Mass


Fools Mass is set during the plague years, somewhere in medieval Europe. A group of village idiots are forced to enact their own mass due to the sudden death of their beloved pastor, an extraordinary man who had given them shelter and trained them to sing. The piece is full of buffoonery and comic audience participation, as well as choral singing of sacred hymns and chants from the 8th through the 17th centuries, producing a vigorous example of Sacred Theatre.

Actor Malik Yoba, best known for the Fox-TV series New York Undercover, the Disney film Cool Runnings, and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too?, leads an annual New York holiday tradition – the 100th annual reading of Clement Clarke Moore’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.' A lantern procession, wreath-laying and hot cocoa reception at the author's gravesite in a nearby cemetery will follow the reading.
