Discussion | Studies Project in Practice: Getting Along

Sophia Cleary was asked to help arrange a small group of artists to come together to meet, talk, work, rehearse, make something and be together stripped of the idea of having to maintain collective thinking. Each individual artist brings themselves and their ideas to see how various strands of information can sit next to each other, work together or not. Can one thing exist without justifying or contextualizing the other? This is about coming together, that is all, it might become about something else-we will see. Each artist will locate their own entry and participation, or, maybe they will become the next historical collective? At press time artists are: Sophia Cleary Samara Davis Adjua Greaves Joseph Teeling Tara Willis Come, watch quietly, ask to engage, offer your thoughts on their conversations and musings. Be a part of this idea and locate yourself on the spectrum of coming together.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Talk | Other Places Your Ancestors Might Be Hiding: “Non-Genealogy” Databases and Internet Resources to Explore

Through their rich offerings of online census records, passenger lists, naturalization records, and other sources, websites dedicated to genealogical research have led to an increased interest in family history. However, there are databases and websites that genealogists might not be aware of which contain information that can be of tremendous value to their research. Some are free sites and others are subscription databases that may be available through a local public library system or university. This lecture will provide brief descriptions of some of the more useful “non-genealogy” sites in both categories. Ruth A. Carr is the former Chief, Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy, New York Public Library (1988-2008). Ms. Carr is a member of the History Section of the American Library Association, serving on its Genealogy and Local History Committees, and is a recipient of the History Section/Genealogical Publishing Company Award for service to genealogical librarianship, 2009.

More than ten years after one of the greatest wake-up calls in human history, our nation seems to have again grown complacent about the issues that suddenly seemed so urgent immediately after 9/11. Former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold looks at institutional failures, both domestic and abroad, since the 9/11 terrorist attacks and proposes steps to be taken--by the government and by individuals to ensure that the next ten years are focused on solving the international problems that threaten America.

Concert | Gary U.S. Bonds performs from his CD Christmas Is ON!

New Orleans R&B singer Gary U.S. Bonds had a major hit in the early 1960s with "Quarter to Three," but quickly faded into obscurity. One man who never forgot Bonds was Bruce Springsteen, who made "Quarter to Three" a staple of his live set and oversaw the release of Bonds's 1981 comeback album, DEDICATION. The album's follow-up repeated its predecessor's successful Springsteen-assisted formula, with Bruce contributing an even bigger percentage of the material. In retrospect its hard to believe that in the wake of two albums as strong as these it took Bonds another 22 years after that to return to the studio again, though he seemingly never tired of playing the Comeback King role to the hilt.

Opening Reception | Photos: Jennifer Des' Ouvre Moi and Les Sangtiments

Des comes from Belgium where she has been working for years on bodies of work that deal with the body's appearance. In Les Sangtiments, the artist explores the theme of suffering as she focuses on heart surgery. Her photographs engage the double meaning of the "heart," relating to feelings and to sorrow. With the Ouvre-Moi series, Des continues to pursue the theme of appearances, focusing this time on the world of cosmetic surgery. These images show the body's transformation and the suffering imposed upon it. Suspended in the void, organs are stripped of their context, giving way to abstract forms, colors and textures. A heart transforms into a butterfly and escapes from a mutilated body, echoing the desire for freedom...a recurrent theme in the artist's work.

Slide Lecture | Ellen Noonan discusses her book The Strange Career of Porgy and Bess: Race, Culture, and America 's Most Famous Opera

Created by George Gershwin and DuBose Heyward and sung by generations of black performers, Porgy and Bess has been both embraced and reviled since its debut in 1935. In this illustrated lecture, the author examines the opera's long history of invention and reinvention as a barometer of twentieth-century American expectations about race, culture, and the struggle for equality. Expertly weaving together the wide-ranging debates over the original novel, Porgy, and its adaptations on stage and film with a history of its intimate ties to Charleston, The Strange Career of Porgy and Bess uncovers the complexities behind one of our nation's most long-lived cultural touchstones.

Talk | TransDance 2012- Body Documents from 1960’s Reda Troupe Dance

In this talk, Sawsan Gad explores the body as a site of documentation of race, gender and class in the work of the 1960’s famous Egyptian Dance company ‘The Reda Troupe’, whose work was influenced by the rise of the nationalist and Arabist discourse set within a Nasser regime. The work of the troupe choreographically traced pre-existing dances from centuries ago, and distilled it through reenactments that are staged (or presented in film) defining an epistemological break through displaced choreographies. Their ‘body documents’ stand as an activated document, in constant friction with the context that surrounds them in Egypt, through the present. Sawsan Gad’s lecture is accompanied by screenings of dance sequences from the Reda Troupe repertoire.

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.

Lecture | Artist Christoph Keller in a Lecture-Performance

A year ago at Centre Pompidou in Paris, Christoph Keller created an exhibition around aether, the material that fills the entire universe above the terrestrial space. At the Goethe-Institut Wyoming Building, he will return to the project, this time connecting it with his previous experiments in hypnosis, Wilhelm Reich's cloud buster theory, and states of trance. In the context of Resonance's engagement with object-oriented thinking, Keller's lecture-performance deals with perturbations of an immaterial order, prompting us to reckon with notions such as the subconscious, the "irrational," or pseudo-science when thinking beyond distinctions between subjects and objects.
