Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Discussion | Out to Lunch - An Artist Dialogue Series Event

Ari Marcopoulos and Andrew Roth discuss the book as exhibition space and chart the history of Marcopoulos’ output from the earliest zines to OUT TO LUNCH, his recent tour-de-force published by PPP Editions. Marcopoulos' first book Portraits from the Studio and the Street (1987) was self-published and part of a larger series on Dutch-born photographers. When he started working with skateboarders around 1993 he became interested in making zines. Publishing independently allowed him to easily disseminate his images and also helped him to formulate new directions in his work. He views the zines and published books as exhibitions.

Discussion | Spreading the Word: Books, Technology and Communication

In this conversation about book history and the media revolution, scholars consider how current transformations in the production, circulation and consumption of books map onto earlier historical periods. In debates today, books are sometimes represented as organic objects under threat from new media technologies and the reading practices these foster. But to what extent do such contrasts between an idealized past and threatening present hold up to scrutiny? Panelists: Jeffrey Freedman, Associate Professor of History, Yeshiva University Carla Hesse, Dean of Social Sciences and Peder Sather Professor of History, University of California, Berkeley Richard John, Professor, Columbia Journalism School Leah Price, Professor of English, Harvard University

Slide Lecture | Joshua L. Gleis discusses his book Hezbollah and Hamas: A Comparative Study

Hezbollah and Hamas are major players in Middle Eastern politics and have a growing involvement in global events. Despite their strikingly different beginnings, they share a common denominator—an adversary in Israel. The author draws from primary interviews and documents combined with a thorough review of current scholarship. This illustrated lecture is a portrait of the organizations’ roots, histories, ideologies, relationships, tactics, political outlooks, and futures. Recognizing that these two groups are increasingly relevant to U.S. national security, he provide a comparative analysis of their histories and political missions that moves beyond reductionist portrayals of the organizations’ military operations.

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.
