Discussion | Studies Project in Practice: Getting Along

Sophia Cleary was asked to help arrange a small group of artists to come together to meet, talk, work, rehearse, make something and be together stripped of the idea of having to maintain collective thinking. Each individual artist brings themselves and their ideas to see how various strands of information can sit next to each other, work together or not. Can one thing exist without justifying or contextualizing the other? This is about coming together, that is all, it might become about something else-we will see. Each artist will locate their own entry and participation, or, maybe they will become the next historical collective? At press time artists are: Sophia Cleary Samara Davis Adjua Greaves Joseph Teeling Tara Willis Come, watch quietly, ask to engage, offer your thoughts on their conversations and musings. Be a part of this idea and locate yourself on the spectrum of coming together.

Lecture | James Lenox and the Origins of The New York Public Library

The New York Public Library, which opened in 1911, had two predecessors—the Lenox on upper Fifth Avenue where the Frick Collection now stands and the Astor housed in the landmark building occupied by the Public Theater. The two libraries differed from one another and from what was to follow. The Astor was essentially a non-lending library and reading room for the citizens of New York, while the Lenox was a treasure house of rare books and works of art.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Lecture | The Failing Mafia State

A talk by William Browder, the Founder and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management. He was the largest foreign investor in Russia and a Putin supporter until November 2005, when he was suddenly expelled from the country and declared a “threat to national security” by the Russian government. The reasons for these actions remain unclear, but were probably retaliation for Browder's accusations about corruption in large state-controlled firms where he was a minority shareholder. His holdings and employees in Russia came under increasing attack. In 2008 his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, announced his discovery that $230 million in state taxes paid by Hermitage in 2006 had been stolen in a bogus tax refund scheme by a group of Russian officials working with organized criminals. The program will begin with a reception at 5:30, followed by the talk.

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.
