Screening | Award-Winning Indian Documentary: Anand Patwardhan's Jai Bhim Comrade (2011)

Fourteen years in the making, Patwardhan's documentary tells a story of Dalit and communal politics in Maharashtra, and the ongoing struggles of Dalits for justice and equality. When a statue of B. R. Ambedkar in Mumbai's Ramabai colony was desecrated in 1997, angry crowds gathered, and the police opened fire, killing ten unarmed persons, all of them from the Dalit community. Vilas Ghogre, an activist, poet and singer, who witnessed the events, later hung himself in despair. Jai Bhim Comrade traces the decade-long story of the protest through the poetry and music of Ghogre and others. Jai Bhim Comrade was named Best Film at both the Mumbai International Film Festival and Film South Asia, Katmandu, Nepal, and received the Firebird Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. 198 min. Followed by a discussion with director Anand Patwardhan

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Gallery Talk | Guided Tour of Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan

A major exhibition that explores the Buddhist cave temples of Xiangtangshan, the crowning cultural achievement of the sixth-century Northern Qi dynasty (550-77 CE). Carved into the mountains of northern China, the temples were once home to a magnificent array of sculptures—monumental Buddhas, divine attendant figures, and crouching monsters framed by floral motifs. These statues are among the finest embodiments of Chinese Buddhist sculpture and are seminal to our understanding of the history of Chinese Buddhist style and iconography.

Forum | Marriage and Equality Panel

Can marriage be reimagined? As much of the LGBTQ community fights for the legal right to be married, some argue this doesn't go far enough. A new legal definition of marriage benefits some who were formerly excluded, but leaves other family and partnership units behind. In this free, public forum, marriage and equality are treated as separate but related constructs. Our diverse panel will explore the functions and identities of marriage, from an expression of attachment and affection to a powerful social institution. Panelists include: Melissa Harris-Perry, Ph.D., Tulane University political science professor and MSNBC opinion show host Kenyon Farrow, activist, writer, Communications Director for The Praxis Project and the former Executive Director of Queers for Economic Justice Liz Margolies, LCSW, activist, National LGBT Cancer Network founder, and newly-engaged psychotherapist Deva Woodly, Ph.D., assistant professor of politics at the New School for Social Research Lisa Rubin, Ph.D., assistant professor of clinical psychology at the New School for Social Research

Discussion | The German Writer Peter Handke in America

A discussion with Fatima Naqvi (Rutgers University), Christoph Bartmann (Goethe Institut NYC), Klaus Kastberger (University of Vienna), Heike Polster (University of Memphis), Krishna Winston (Wesleyan University), and Thorsten Carstensen (The Indiana University School of Liberal Arts). Peter Handke in America is an important theme for understanding the writer’s work. Because of his life-long fascination with America, Handke was among the first German-speaking writers of his generation to present a positive image of the United States against the anti-imperialist aversions of the European 1968-movement. Particularly in his early work, scholars have traced his fascination with writers such as John Ford, Walker Percy (whom he also translated), as well as the blues, New York City, the image of the “Native American” and with the beauty of the American landscape. His 1971 novel Short Letter, Long Farewell makes his fascination with the United States the central motif. Handke also lived in New York (after lengthy travels through Alaska), where in 1979 he wrote his important novel The Long Way Round. In his film Three American LPs, he co-produced with Wim Wenders, many of these themes can also be clearly identified.

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.
