City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Lecture | Renaissance Modern: Old (and New) Masters in the Museum of Modern Art

A lecture by Richard Meyer, University of Southern California. In January 1940, MoMA mounted Italian Masters, an exhibition of Renaissance and baroque art on special loan from the Italian government. The show featured world-‐famous paintings such as Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Raphael’s Madonna of the Chair, and Titian’s Portrait of Pope Paul III, as well as a Michelangelo bas-‐relief of the Madonna and Child in marble, none of which had ever before been displayed in New York. Italian Masters became the most popular exhibition in the museum’s history to that date, attracting nearly 300,000 visitors during its three-‐month run. This lecture examines the popular success of Italian Masters in the context of the mounting political tensions between the U.S. and Italy in 1940 as well as the apparent paradox of showing 15th and 16th century paintings in a museum dedicated to late 19th and 20th century art.

Talk | Modes of Distraction

Drawing examples from 19th-, 20th- and 21st-century art, noted art historian Richard Shiff investigates a number of cases in which the capacity of a particular medium to resolve an image seems to be tested. Shiff examines experimental landscape photography from the middle of the 19th-century as well as the work of Cézanne, Seurat and van Gogh which resulted in debates over the proper relationship of a representational image to the abstract marks that constitute it. If the marks became a distraction, Shiff proposes, the image might be lost.

This new project by young Viennese pianist, singer, and composer Stephanie Hacker melds personal feelings with unaffected words and transparent music into a compilation of touching songs. Educated in classical music and jazz, she takes influences of these styles and mixes them with pop sounds and modern grooves – and at the same time leaves much space for improvisation.
