Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Slide Lecture | Alex MacLean discusses his book Up on the Roof: New York's Hidden Skyline Spaces

For over thirty years, the author has documented the American landscape from the air. His remarkable photographs capture the surreal beauty of the visual patterns formed by the intersection of natural and constructed environments. He directs his lens at the rarely seen "top floor" of New York City and reveals a hidden world of amazing complexity, diversity, and life. Alongside the city's famous water towers are pools, sunbathers, tennis courts, art, restaurants, gardens, and solar panels. His photographs leave little doubt about New York City's "green" potential and the belief that improved outdoor spaces above lead to more livable cities below. In his illustrated lecture, the maps and captions help the audience to easily identify the photographs. Whether you are new to the city or native born, this fascinating look at hidden New York will be a revelation.

Discussion | Remembering Auschwitz Survivor Jean Améry (1912–1978)

Austrian born writer Jean Améry, who chose Brussels as his hometown after the Second World War, was one of the most distinguished essayists, cultural critics, and avant-garde writers of the twentieth century. Jenseits von Schuld und Sühne (At the Mind’s Limits), the report on his time in Auschwitz, published in 1966, received worldwide attention. A series of challenging essays followed. Besides his book length studies on aging (1968), and on suicide (1976), Jean Améry, published numerous collections of shorter texts on the modern condition such as Widersprüche (Contradictions, 1971), but also on the politics of the day during the heated debates in the late 1960s. Organized by scholars from the German department, the Draper program and the Trauma & Violence interdisciplinary program, the panel intends to honor Jean Améry’s centenary with three succinct talks of twenty-five minutes length each. The talks address key concepts of Améry’s haunting work such as trauma, Heimat, and aging.

Workshop | The Art of the Personal Essay

Using what might seem to be an insignificant or ordinary event and then making it universal in scope, the best personal essays illuminate and transcend the subject so that the reader—and often the writer—learns something important about him or herself. Best described as a combination of a letter and a short story, the personal essay can tackle weighty subjects like birth, death and marriage, or lighter moments like buying a new car or playing touch football in the park. With Charles Salzberg.

Lecture | What’s Gaga Got to Do With It? Gaga Feminism and Queer Anarchy

In Gaga Feminism, Jack Halberstam locates Lady Gaga as less an icon than an avatar for new forms of gender and sex politics. The power of “gaga” bubbles up from surrealist movements of the 1920′s to situationist happenings in the 1960′s and then takes the shape of queer anarchist politics in our unfolding present. Arguing for an anarcho-queer theory project that disorganizes itself around feminist figures like Emma Goldman and Shulamith Firestone and that builds on the creative theoretical projects of Fred Moten, the Invisible Committee and others, this talk traces “gaga” back to earlier musical and political moments of going gaga and forward to occupation movements and direct action groups. The talk finally asks what, if anything, Lady Gaga has to do with feminism, queer studies or anarchism.

Forum | The Talkers

The number of symposia, panels and lectures offered in New York in any one week can be overwhelming. Whatever etymology, the discussion is usually based upon “THE TOPIC.” The Talkers is an evening that ventures from this format, in which there are five topics, one proposed by each of the participants. Each “Talker” presents his or her thoughts, generating a “megalopolis” of ideas. The responses and conversations unfold in this public forum. Panelists enact the role of talk, talking and talkers as an enterprise of currency in contemporary art and culture. The Talkers include visual artists, writers, educators and curators. Screening | Shatter the Tale to Fragments: Jazz Artists in Hollywood Movies

James Baldwin once wrote about the sudden appearance of talented black performers in otherwise forgettable films as "hints of reality, smuggled like contraband into a maudlin tale, and with enough force, if unleashed, to shatter the tale to fragments." The great jazz artists we see in Hollywood films may not always be explosive, but they are often much more enjoyable than anything else in the film.
