Parade | Hiroya Miura & Michael J. Smith's Recordare, a World Premiere

A world premiere by composer Hiroya Miura reflects on the ideas of “judgment day” and the cyclical nature of time, for a performance on the date believed to be the end of a 5,000-year cycle on the Mayan calendar. Starting underneath the carillon at the church, two groups of brass musicians will emerge, accompanied by bells, and march through the neighborhood using streets and neighborhood landmarks as musical cues. When the two marching groups cross paths, they will congregate to play Berlioz’s version of Dies Irae before resuming a journey to rejoin the carillon music at the church played by carilloneur Michael J. Smith.

Gallery Talk | Guided Tour of Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan

A major exhibition that explores the Buddhist cave temples of Xiangtangshan, the crowning cultural achievement of the sixth-century Northern Qi dynasty (550-77 CE). Carved into the mountains of northern China, the temples were once home to a magnificent array of sculptures—monumental Buddhas, divine attendant figures, and crouching monsters framed by floral motifs. These statues are among the finest embodiments of Chinese Buddhist sculpture and are seminal to our understanding of the history of Chinese Buddhist style and iconography.

Performance | Comedy: The Vigilante

Most bands write out a set list before a performance. They can direct the ebb and flow of emotions by carefully placing songs in a particular order. The Vigilante approaches a concert with a figurative blank canvass. Our concerts are entirely improvised and evolve organically. The audience decides the emotional swings, the peaks and troughs. We feel our set list. Our show is entirely collaborative. The lead singer, and an occasional band member, will talk to the audience to garner words, phrases, interactions, stories, and even musical requests from the audience to create an entire set list of completely original songs. Our music evolves in real time. And we do covers!
