Lecture | Coming Out or Inviting In?: Reframing Disclosure Paradigms

A Brown Bag Lunch Talk with Darnell L. Moore. Does “coming out of the closet” properly function as the most useful way to name one’s quest towards self and communal liberation and expression? Does usage of the “coming out” idiom–and “the closet” metaphor–facilitate or impede the liberatory potential of affirming theologies and pastoral counseling approaches? Moore’s talk will consider such questions and argue for a turn to a new intervention, or what he names, the process of “inviting in.” Part of the Brown Bag Lunch Talk Series — bring your own lunch and they’ll provide beverages and dessert! Darnell L. Moore’s writing has appeared in Black Theology: An International Journal, Theology & Sexuality and Pneuma: The Journal of the Society of Pentecostal Studies. He is also an active member of the queer activist community in Newark, NJ where he serves as the Chair of Mayor Cory Booker of Newark’s Advisory Commission on LGBTQ Concerns and Education Chair of the Newark Pride Alliance.

Talk | The Encyclopedia of New York City

Exhaustive in its range of information about the five boroughs, the first edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City (1995) became an instant classic, earning worldwide acclaim, awards for reference excellence, and selling out its first printing before it was officially published. But in the ever-evolving New York City, change is the constant. The new edition covers both the unpredictable events of 9/11 and the unlikely three-term mayoralty of a billionaire businessman, and documents the slower shifts of urban regeneration of many city neighborhoods. The revised edition includes 800 new entries, with new material that includes broader coverage of subject areas and new maps and illustrations. Virtually all existing entries - spanning architecture, politics, business, sports, the arts, and more - have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades.

Lecture | The Messiah from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to Modern Popular Culture

With Ronald J. Brown, Associate Professor, Touro College and Unification Theological Seminary. The slogan, "When the going gets tough, the tough get God," has inspired religions since the Stone Age. When the ancient Hebrews were in exile in Babylon they elaborated the concept of a Messiah who would rescue them and restore them to their homeland and national greatness. The Christian book of Revelation portrays in vivid detail the Second Coming of Jesus the Messiah and the glorious age of Heaven on Earth. Muslims await the Mahdi who will rid the world of wrongdoing, injustice, and tyranny. The Messiah figures prominently as Muadib in Frank Herbert’s Dune books and films, Jake in the recent film Avatar, and contemporary apocalyptic literature and religious movements.

Here are two facts missing from populist history: the colonial revolt eliminated the prospect of British abolition; eight presidents were slaveholders while holding office. In this book, scholar and journalist Clarence Lusane juxtaposes significant events in White House history against the social progress of African Americans. Please join Lusane for a reading and illuminating discussion about the White House players whom acted to advance, to thwart, and to ignore the promise of liberty for all.

Lecture | French Anthropology and Literature: From Mauss and Bataille to Lévi-Strauss and Barthes

Drawing on his new book L’Adieu au Voyage, published last fall by Gallimard in its Bibliothèque des Sciences Humaines series, Vincent Debaene will discuss the complex and ambivalent relationship of French anthropology to literature. He will try to seize the very identity of a tradition which, since the 1920’s, mixes claims of scientificity and desire for literature, hardcore structures and avant-garde literary experiments. Marcel Mauss, Claude Lévi-Strauss, but also Georges Bataille and Roland Barthes are characters in this story.
