Lecture | Religion, Race, and Sex in the American Antislavery Mission to Jamaica

Before the Civil War, white American abolitionists established a mission in Jamaica as a "test case" for emancipation. The abolitionists struggled to reconcile their political commitment to egalitarianism with the racial and cultural hierarchies of their civilizing mission. This talk by Gale Kenny will examine this tension through the lens of a sex scandal that almost destroyed the mission in 1850, as it forced the missionaries and Jamaicans to reconsider their assumptions about racial and religious authority, female morality, and the relationship between sexuality and spirituality. Kenny, ACLS New Faculty Fellow in Religion, is the author of Contentious Liberties: American Abolitionists in Post-Emancipation Jamaica, 1834-1866.

Lecture | Language and Caste in India

With Toral Gajarawala, Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature. This talk will consider the way in which Anglophone and vernacular language writing in India has dealt with the problem of caste. Moving from the early period of fiction in English and Hindi in the 1930's, that of Premchand and Mulk Raj Anand, to contemporary "Dalit" or "untouchable caste" literature in India, Professor Gajarawala will discuss how writers imagined and analyzed this social system of hierarchy as Gandhians, as Marxists, as anti-caste activists. The talk will begin with a discussion of three incidents of book burning, each of which frame the debate surrounding the intellectual problem of caste.
