Concert | Camille Dereux, soprano & Audrey Abela, piano

Young French soprano Camille Dereux began singing with the Children's Choir of the Paris Opera when she was just 11 years old. There, she had the opportunity to tour Europe and perform on some of the world's most prestigious stages as a vocal soloist. At the age of sixteen she entered the Professional section of the Lausanne Conservatory in Switzerland for five years. She appeared in the opéra The Servant composed by Marco Tutino in Czech Republic and in Hungary and will perform it again in the Theatre Rossini in Italy. She will also perform the Mass in C Minor by Mozart in Switzerland. Audrey Abela started playing piano at the age of 7. She had private lessons for many years with French pianist Olivier Cazal. When she was 14, she moved to Paris to study in Boulogne-Billancourt Conservatory with Marie-Paule Siruguet and Hortense Cartier-Bresson. She has participated in many music festivals in France, Spain, Finland, and Canada. She is performing as a soloist and as a chamber musician in venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Symphony Space, salle Gaveau, and Chateau de Chantilly in her home country.

Lecture | Cutting-Edge Insufficiency: The Photography of Germany’s Weimar Period

Germany's Weimar years are widely considered to have been marked by a flourish of media optimism, particularly with regard to photography. But did makers and consumers of photographic images genuinely feel that the medium accurately represented their moment's multifaceted complexity? This talk by Andres Zervigon will suggest that the answer was no, and that it was just such an optical insufficiency that gave rise to much of the experimentation typifying Weimar’s great moment of photography.

Lecture | A Gift Horse Whose Face(book) Deserves Scrutiny: Will Mark Zuckerberg's $100 Million Gift Improve Education in Newark?

In the last four months, public education in Newark has received national attention. A gift of $100 million given by Facebook’s CEO to improve public education and the mayor's commitment to raise matching funds has put Newark in the spotlight. Additionally, Governor Christie's delegation of state control to the mayor, although not within the governor’s authority, has given the mayor significant power to shape the reform agenda. Based on an analysis of sociological research on urban educational reform, this presentation will discuss a number of strategies that Newark might consider as it invests these funds in seeking to “transform public education in Newark” and will also address the limits and possibilities of these approaches. Dr. Alan Sadovnik is an education and sociology professor at Rutgers University, where he was recently named Board of Governors Distinguished Service Professor.

Author Reading | Book Launch: Gregory Sholette's Dark Matter: Art and Politics in the Age of Enterprise Culture

Dark Matter: Art and Politics in the Age of Enterprise Culture is both a book launch for Gregory Sholette's new work of the same title, and a concrete application of the principles laid out in the book. The book argues that imagination and creativity in the art world originate and thrive in the non-commercial sector. It examines the political economy of art and business by highlighting interventionist and collective art as the 'dark matter' of the art world. This dark matter is indispensible to the survival of mainstream culture which it frequently opposes. Two projects are lifted from the book's pages and installed in the lobby for passersby to participate. Boston-based artist Cat Mazza offers a craftism workshop, based on the work of her organization MicroRevolt. MicroRevolt projects investigate the dawn of sweatshops in early industrial capitalism to inform the current crisis of global expansion and the feminization of labor. New York-based artist Jim Costanzo calls for the 2nd Whisky Rebellion: A Distillation of American Spirit. The original Whiskey Rebellion was a tax protest in Pennsylvania in the 1790s, during the presidency of George Washington. The conflict was rooted in western dissatisfaction with a 1791 excise tax on whiskey. The tax was a part of treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton's program to centralize and fund the national debt. Costanzo will be acting on behalf of the Aaron Burr Society which has begun to distill whiskey without a license, in an act of flagrant civil disobedience.

With support from the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, the Harrisons’ latest large-scale project offers models for regeneration in response to the dramatically shocked environment of this vast area. Symposium | Francesca da Rimini: Fortunes and Literary Myth from Europe to the Americas

Every reader of The Divine Comedy has shed more than one tear over the destiny of Francesca da Rimini, a character of which we know almost exclusively what Dante tells us about her. This evening is dedicated entirely to her, the most romantic and inspiring female character produced by Italian literature. Welcoming remarks: Maurizio Melucci, Tourism Commissioner, Emilia-Romagna Region; Antonella Beltrami, Culture Commissioner, City of Rimini. Moderated by Nadia Urbinati (Columbia University). John Freccero (New York University): Dante's Francesca (in English) Ferruccio Farina: The American Fortune of Francesca da Rimini's Romantic Myth (Slides in English, Talk in Italian) American Memories: Screening of clips from: The two brothers, or Francesca da Rimini (Silent film by William Ranous, 1910) and Francesca Da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonai, 1914, Metropolitan Opera House Production (1984), Act V, "Kiss Scene" with Renata Scotto and Placido Domingo.

Opening Reception | New Paintings and Collages by Josh Smith

An exhibition of new work by Josh Smith. This will mark his third solo show with the gallery and will present a selection of paintings and collages. Smith is perhaps best known for paintings featuring his name writ large, the letters of which fluctuate between signifiers of the name and abstracted forms. In recent years, he has experimented with more figurative subjects such as fish and leaves, and his newest works include depictions of skeletons and insects. Each motif is chosen not as a subject to be precisely rendered, but rather as a point of departure in his ongoing exploration of abstraction. In forcing the painted subject to be somewhat arbitrary, Smith strives to take the act of painting beyond aesthetics.

In this myth-shattering book, Edward Glaeser travels through history and around the globe to reveal the hidden workings of cities, finding that even the worst cities confer surprising benefits on the people who flock to them, including better health and more jobs than the rural areas that surround them.

A discussion featuring artist and faculty member Joseph Nechvatal and composer Rhys Chatham, moderated by MFA Art Practice Department Chair David Ross. Following the discussion will be a screening of Viral Venture, a digital projection by Nechvatal with a score by Chatham. Viral Venture consists of Nechvatal’s most recent artificial-life computer virus attacking his digital paintings of human retinas and anuses; Chatham’s score consists of his 2005 composition for 400 electric guitars, A Crimson Grail.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: Leah Nanako Winkler's Death for Sydney Black

Death for Sydney Black follows Nancy, the frumpy new girl at Northeast Valley High, as she maneuvers her way through an absurdist deconstruction of a familiar movie genre. Props fall from the sky and original songs on ukulele frame this wacky world, but a truth about the way girls – and ultimately women – treat each other rises. This all-female ensemble of five portray girls with ambition, girls aimlessly searching, girls with pom poms, girls with lipstick, and the boys who love them.
