Lecture | American Jewish Fiction: Strange and Surprising Stories

Josh Lambert will be the guest speaker. American novels have featured Jewish characters for over a century, and these books tell strange and surprising stories about the experiences of American Jews. What sort of books should be considered Jewish American novels? What are the common narratives and tropes of such works of fiction, and why are they repeated so frequently in the literature of the United States? Who writes these books, and for what audiences? Focusing on some of the earliest and most unusual novels in the American Jewish tradition, and highlighting a few lost gems along the way, this lecture will survey the history of American Jewish fiction and discuss its achievements and possibilities.

Performance | Gigi's Gen-X Singalong, Vol. 2 (Encore): Violent Femmes

Is it a film screening or a live performance? YES! Gigi’s Gen-X Singalong is for anyone who has spent a few too many evenings sitting around listening to their old cassette tapes. Come on down, have a cocktail, and relive the Reagan years—without the politics. When Gigi introduced the Singalong back in 2008, she had no idea she would still be at it three years later. Okay, she had some idea, but now that the big anniversary is approaching, she’s ready to celebrate—with you! Every month this spring, the Singalong will be rocking the house at Parkside Lounge in the Lower East Side. Start doing your vocal warm-ups now! This month's show is based on Violent Femmes, the 1982 album by the band of the same name. Original videos for every one of the record's 12 songs include on-screen lyrics to aid in the singing process. Singing out loud is not technically required, but they hope you won't be able to help yourself!

Staged Reading | Play Reading: The Pact by Betty Jane Wylie

Canadian playwright Betty Jane Wylie brings to life the intense, mesmeric relationship between celebrated Danish writer Isaak Dinesen and Thorkild Bjornvig, a rising Danish poet who was half Dinesen's age when they met in 1949. Isak Dinesen was the pen name of Baroness Karen Blixen. Dinesen was widely admired for works such as Out of Africa, Babette's Feast and Seven Gothic Tales. Wylie renders Dinesen as the alluring, one-of-a-kind personality and artist that she truly was, and as a woman still full of passion and power in her later years. Meet the playwright, Betty Jane Wylie, at the reading.
