Screening | Documentary: Voodoo and the Church in Haiti (1988)

Documenting Faith: A Film Screening of Voodoo and the Church in Haiti Share Recommend Email Print Share Saturday, February 19, 2011 - 2:00 PM EST Columbus Library (Map and directions) Fully accessible to wheelchairs Documentary films from the Library’s extensive collection illuminate poignant (and sometimes surprising) aspects of lived religious experience around the world. (1988, 40 min. )- Despite centuries of vigilant opposition by the Catholic Church, voodoo has flourished in Haiti. This documentary dispels the sensationalist stereotypes that surround voodoo by analyzing the religion as a complex system of beliefs that has its roots in West Africa. When the slaves who labored on the island's large plantations revolted against their French oppressors in 1804, they returned to the African belief system though Christianity remained the "official" religion. Today, with the country struggling under the weight of repressive dictatorships, voodoo continues to offer an outlet for political and religious expression. Inextricably bound to the rhythms of daily life, voodoo combines worship of Christian deities with veneration of ancestral spirits and is a vital force in music, art, mythology and dance. 40 min.

Screening | Orlando Bagwell's Documentary Malcolm X: Make It Plain (1994)

Narrated by Alfre Woodard, this documentary paints a detailed portrait of Malcolm X - political philosopher and visionary, husband and father, dynamic orator and militant minister. In his lifetime, Malcolm X was many men. Born Malcolm Little, he later became "Detroit Red" and "New York Red" -- a hustler, drug pusher, pimp, con man and the head of a Boston robbery ring. After spending time in prison, he emerged as Minister Malcolm -- Malcolm X, the fiery, eloquent spokesman for the Nation of Islam. Finally, he became El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, an internationally recognized leader and advocate for oppressed peoples. He was both loved and despised, revered and feared-- until an assassin's bullet cut him down at age 39. 150 min.

Concert | Rock: Sister Helen

Sister Helen are a young rock band seeking to conquer the world through sheer power, applied in sophisticated proportion. A guitar, a bass, and a drum set fuse into a sound like the judgment of God, while at the same time keeping their distinctness and shading in the subtleties of the sound, deep as a valley in the goatherding Alps. Over it all a singer makes his immutable proclamations in the style of the ancient prophets of the Mediterranean world. Those who attend Sister Helen's Mass do not hold back. They hold on.

Performance | Down the Rabbit Hole: Liza Jessie Peterson

Even if Liza Jessie Peterson hadn’t attended the prestigious National Shakespeare Conservatory, made a cameo in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, had plays performed at the Whitney, or won poetry slams at the Nuyorican Poetry Café, this self-described “tour-de-force Renaissance woman” would still have her most defining accomplishment: teaching and motivating incarcerated youth at Riker’s Island. Down the Rabbit Hole is a mash-up of the whole of these experiences, featuring music, theater, and poetry based fittingly around the theme of finding light in dark places.
