Lecture | Russia’s Post-Soviet Landscape

A talk by Susan Richards, author of Lost and Found in Russia. After the fall of communism, Richards started chronicling the lives and careers of a group of Russians living far from the capital. She revisited them repeatedly over the course of 16 years, observing the way in which the larger forces unleashed in Russia's politics and economy were being reflected or resisted in their own life decisions, and those of the communities around them. She reflects on what she saw and what it might tell us about the changed nature of Russia today. Richards is founder editor of the online magazine opendemocracyRussia. Her second book, Lost and Found in Russia, has just been published in the United States. She wrote her doctorate about Alexander Solzhenitsyn before becoming a film producer. Gorbachev’s reforms drew her back to Russia in 1988 to research her first, prize-winning, book, Epics of Everyday Life about the impact of glasnost on people whose outlook had changed little since Stalin’s death.

Other | Digital Diaspora Family Reunion, A Participatory Multimedia Initiative

The launch of a unique new project. For 15 years, award-winning documentary filmmaker and artist Thomas Allen Harris has mined his family archive to create compelling narratives that engage, entertain, and illuminate the intersections of personal family history with the historical sweep of our culture and times. "Why leave your photographs stored in boxes,” Harris says, “when they can educate and empower new generations about who we are and where we come from?" Harris' latest creation, Digital Diaspora Family Reunion, is a participatory multimedia initiative in which audiences bring history to life through their photos and stories. Harris encourages participants to bring photo albums, pictures and mementos and share family stories. Then return on Feb 27 for a presentation celebrating the collective history.

"The honest truth is that it's sad to be over sixty," concludes Nora Ephron in her new book about aging. With 15 essays in 160 pages, this collection is short, a thoughtful concession to pre- and post-menopausal women (who else is there?), like herself, who "can't read a word on the pill bottle," follow a thought to a conclusion, or remember the thought after not being able to read the pill bottle.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Cameron Martin's Bracket

A solo exhibition of new paintings by the Brooklyn-based artist Cameron Martin. The exhibition marks an exciting moment in Martin's ongoing investigation of image production as it relates to landscape. As the title suggests, in his new work Martin engages multiple meanings of the term bracketing, by leaving sections of pale-toned space that frame the image inside the canvas, employing multiple exposures in certain repeated images, and promoting the implication of information that has been excluded from the pictures due to their cropping. In this new group of paintings on canvas and paper, he works at collapsing the interrelationship between painting, photography, and digital media. Shown: "Balantane," 2011, Acrylic on canvas, 66 x 105.5 inches (167.6 x 267.9 cm).

Lecture | The Evolution of Nuclear Fear, 1900-2010

A lecture by Spencer Weart, American Institute of Technology. The public's image of nuclear energy has been linked, ever since the discovery of radioactivity, with powerful myths. By the 1930s the public associated "atomic energy" with powerful and possibly mad scientists, weird monsters, medical miracles, death rays, planet-wide explosions, dreadful weapons, and cosmic secrets. After the bombing of Hiroshima these science-fiction images came into the cultural mainstream. Official attempts to divert fears with "Atoms for Peace" helped spur the growth of a civilian industry, but in the 1970s many turned their fears toward nuclear reactors and wastes. A new period of this atomic culture began in the late 1980s, when the end of the Cold War quelled fears of an apocalyptic nuclear war and the Chernobyl disaster halted both the expansion of nuclear industry and its passionate opposition. For the new generation, imagery of monsters and rays evoked not so much visceral anxiety as the ironic amusement of postmodern referencing. Yet the mythical themes in nuclear imagery persisted in media from popular movies to video games. Indeed terrorist threats and the proliferation of nuclear weapons in undemocratic nations strengthened one old complex of images, in which untrustworthy scientists merged with tyrants and criminals. All this widespread imagery, however irrational, had practical consequences in matters ranging from nuclear waste storage to national security policies.

Lecture | The Image as Agency: How Gilbert Simondon's Theory of the Image Shaped Gilles Deleuze's Approach to Cinema

Yves Citton will discuss the original and powerful theory of the image elaborated by French philosopher Gilbert Simondon during the 1960s, which appears to have had a major influence on Gilles Deleuze's writing and teaching about cinema. For Simondon, the image is endowed with its own agency: it is constituted through an exchange of information with our environment and acquires autonomous agency as it is transmitted from one individual to another. Citton is professor of 18th Century French Literature at the Université de Grenoble-3, a researcher with the CNRS, and an invited Professor at NYU and Harvard in 2011.

Talk | Artist Talk with Mark Dion

Dion received a BFA (1986) and an honorary doctorate (2003) from the University of Hartford School of Art. Dion’s work examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world. The artist’s spectacular and often fantastical curiosity cabinets, modeled on Wunderkabinetts of the 16th Century, exalt atypical orderings of objects and specimens. By locating the roots of environmental politics and public policy in the construction of knowledge about nature, Mark Dion questions the authoritative role of the scientific voice in contemporary society. He has had major exhibitions at the Miami Art Museum; the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut; and Tate Gallery, London. Neukom Vivarium, a permanent outdoor installation and learning lab for the Olympic Sculpture Park, was commissioned by the Seattle Art Museum.

Slide Lecture | Fran Leadon discusses his book AIA Guide to New York City, 5th Edition

This knowledgeable, playful, and beautifully illustrated talk, offers the ultimate guided tour of New York's architectural treasures. First published in 1968, the AIA Guide to New York City has long been the definitive guide to the city's architecture. This Fifth Edition continues its legacy. Moving through all five boroughs, neighborhood by neighborhood, it offers the most complex overview of significant places, past and present. This edition continues to include places of historical importance - including extensive coverage of the WOrld Trade Center site - while also taking full account of the construction boom of the past 10 years. All the buildings included in the Fourth Edition have been revisited and re-photographed and much of the commentary has been rewritten. In addition, coverage of the outer boroughs, particularly Brooklyn, has been expanded.
