Forum | Foster Teens in Transition: Are They Better Off Today?

For years, rates of homelessness among the city's former foster youth have remained stubbornly high. The city is connecting more teens to families, keeping more of them out of foster care in the first place, and developing new programs for pregnant and parenting foster teens. But for those remaining in foster and group homes, resources are being cut. Can NYC meet the needs of teens still in care, and those who have recently left? Are young people leaving foster care better prepared for adulthood today than they were a decade ago? A Child Welfare Watch forum with: Linda Lausell Bryant, Executive Director, Inwood House; Priti Kataria, ACT (Adolescents Confronting Transition) Director, Lawyers for Children; Theresa Nolan, Division Director NYC Programs, Green Chimneys; Rosetta Savana, Participant, Nurse-Family Partnership; Maryanne Schretzman, Family Services Coordinator, Office of Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs; and Lorraine Stephens, Deputy Commissioner for Family Permanency Services, NYC Administration for Children’s Services. Lecture | Reflections in the Mirror of the Soul: Writing the History of Photography in the Middle East

Photography arrived in the Middle East months after its debut in Europe and the history of photography in the region has been largely written through the images of nineteenth-century European travelers. However, the emergence of archives, such as the Arab Image Foundation, which assemble expansive collections of photographs taken by local practitioners prove that this modern medium has been integral to representations of power, political protest, popular culture, and commercial enterprise here as elsewhere. Moreover, such collections call on the history of photography in the region to articulate the relationship between the Middle East and modernity within the present cultural context. With Mitra Abbaspour, Associate Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art and a PhD candidate at The Graduate Center, CUNY.

Harris encourages participants to bring photo albums, pictures and mementos and share family stories. Then return on Feb 27 for a presentation celebrating the collective history.

Talk | Artist Talk with Mark Dion

Dion received a BFA (1986) and an honorary doctorate (2003) from the University of Hartford School of Art. Dion’s work examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world. The artist’s spectacular and often fantastical curiosity cabinets, modeled on Wunderkabinetts of the 16th Century, exalt atypical orderings of objects and specimens. By locating the roots of environmental politics and public policy in the construction of knowledge about nature, Mark Dion questions the authoritative role of the scientific voice in contemporary society. He has had major exhibitions at the Miami Art Museum; the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut; and Tate Gallery, London. Neukom Vivarium, a permanent outdoor installation and learning lab for the Olympic Sculpture Park, was commissioned by the Seattle Art Museum.

Forum | The National Book Foundation presents Lineage: American Poetry Since 1950

The National Book Foundation has asked six leading poet-critics to offer their opinions on the list of winners of the National Book Award in Poetry since 1950. Virtually every major American poet appears on the list, including names like Williams, Stevens, Auden, Roethke, Moore, Berryman, Bishop, Lowell, O’Hara, Ginsberg, Merrill, and Ashbery. What, if any, is the connection between these poets? Is there something distinctly American about their work? Was their selection the result of a political or aesthetic moment, or was it clear to the selection committee (made up of fellow poets) that theirs was work that would last? What does this list tell us about American poetry since the postwar period? Each panelist presents a five-minute response to the list, followed by discussion and questions from the audience. With Elizabeth Alexander, Stephen Burt, Tony Hoagland, James Longenbach, Maureen McLane, and Susan Stewart. Moderated by Craig Morgan Teicher.
