Lecture | The Gender of Institutionalized Corruption in Russia

A lecture by Janet E. Johnson, Associate Professor, Brooklyn College). Anticorruption experts accuse Russia of being one of the most corrupt countries in the world, but their definition of corruption focuses attention on transactions between individuals, such as bribery or embezzlement, rather than on the systemic problems. This project, part of a larger book manuscript on gender and corruption, recasts corruption as a question of institutions, building on Richard Sakwa’s dual state framework and theories of post-Soviet neopatrimonialism.

Concert | Contemporary Cimbalom featuring Either/Or

This concert explores the incredible sonic possibilities of the cimbalom. A trapezoid-shaped hammer dulcimer, cimbalom crops up regularly in the folk music of Hungary and Romania. Talk | How Arabs Became Jews in Brazil

While contemporary images place Arabs and Jews in oppositional categories, that has not been traditionally the case in Brazil. Many influential Brazilians believed that Arab and Jewish "blood," for better and for worse, was a component of Brazil's national character. As a result, Arabs and Jews had a special place among the elite as both friend and enemy, exotically different yet somehow familiar. Speaker Jeffrey Lesser is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History at Emory University, and the author of several books on immigration in Brazil, most recently Immigration, Ethnicity and National Identity in Brazil.

Reading | The Book Lovers: A Reading Party!

Books are nice to look at, but they are meant to be read! Join in uncovering some of the treasures in The Book Lovers artist novel collection from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, Belgium. Michelle Levy hosts an evening of reading, spontaneous interpretation, and plain old fun. Guests will get a quick tour of the show, then will have the opportunity to select a novel to read from the library on view. In addition to the novel you choose, you will have access to the database to gain more background on the artist/author and discover how the novel relates to his/her larger body of work. After an hour of reading silently... together, you will regroup (with some snacks and drinks) and collectively share and discuss what we have discovered, each reader playing emissary for the book you have read. The goal is to leave with a deeper understanding of the artist novel library, the many ways the fiction novel format may be co-opted by artists, and perhaps a few new books to add to your reading list.

Reading | Party for The Literarian

Two years ago, the center launched The Literarian magazine, with the intention of showcasing a wide range of thought-provoking literary writing. They've published well-known literary figures alongside first-time authors, and run traditionally constructed, emotionally complex stories next to those that push the limits of subversion. Tonight, they offer a sampling from three very different writers, along with a few libations. Sigrid Nunez, whose wickedly delightful—and astute—myth “Betrayal” appears in the current issue, has published six novels, including A Feather on the Breath of God, The Last of Her Kind, and, most recently, Salvation City. Terese Svoboda, whose formally transgressive, emotionally sucker-punching story “Kosciusco Bridge” appeared in the fall 2012 issue, is the author, most recently, of the novel is Bohemian Girl. Rumaan Alam, whose delicate, heartbreaking story about the illusion of safety, “A Certainty,” will appear in the spring, 2013 issue, has also had work in Washington Square Review, the Gettysburg Review, Crazyhorse, American Short Fiction, and Avery Anthology.
