City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | Subversive Shaw: An Introduction to the Life and Works of George Bernard Shaw

Under the cloak of sublime comedy, Shaw sought to expose the hypocrisy of Victorian society and morality. He was the author of some sixty plays (including Pygmalion, Major Barbara, and Caesar and Cleopatra), prefaces which were sometimes longer than the plays themselves, five novels, music and theatre criticism, innumerable socialist pamphlets and political tracts, and several thousand letters. This presentation will explore the life and work of this brilliant, witty, and subversive literary figure.

Discussion | Author Thomas Meinecke in Conversation

Thomas Meinecke has been working as a musician, DJ, radio journalist, and writer for almost three decades. "Being creative" would probably be the last term he would come up with concerning his own productivity. Rather, he is interested in sampling, remixing, and other deconstructions of the creator's myth; and especially in productive misunderstandings regarding the relationship between Europe/Germany and the United States. Recently, two of his novels, Pale Blue and Tomboy, were published in English translation. Thomas Meinecke will read excerpts from these two novels and explain his poetics using literary and musical examples.

Author Reading | Jonathan Fineberg reads from his book A Troublesome Subject

The first major book to consider the life and work of Robert Arneson, A Troublesome Subject tells the fascinating story of how a high school art teacher transformed himself into an artist of international stature and ambition. Representing the full scope of Arneson’s career in a rich survey of color reproductions, this book is at once a study of the trajectory of contemporary culture, the work of Robert Arneson, and the relationship between the two. Fineberg shows how Arneson’s work articulated the crisis of narcissism that has defined American culture since 1970.
