Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Pamela Shields / Jo-Ann Brody

Pamela Shields, One Body - Shields explores female sexuality in her large charcoal drawings. She is exhibiting her 'Masturbation Series' for the first time at Ceres Gallery. Frank depiction of a woman as a sexual being, rather than as a sexual object, is still taboo. Shields breaks down this taboo by presenting women's sexuality as a beautiful thing in her monumental, weighty figures. Jo-Ann Brody, Scar Tissue - Scars are areas of tissue that replace normal skin after injury. A scar results from the biological process of repair and scarring is a natural part of the healing process. Every wound results in some degree of scarring. Scars represent healing of many sorts-healthy or not. Scars are metaphorically and/or literally explored through the artist's personal iconography.

The most recent manifestation of artists working at the intersection of art, science, and technology demonstrates a distinctly autodidactic, heuristic approach to understanding the physical and natural world. Intimate Science features artists who are engaged in non-disciplinary inquiry; they aren’t allied to the customs of any single field, and therefore have license to reach beyond conventions. Exhibition artists: BCL (Tokyo), Center for PostNatural History (Pittsburgh), Markus Kayser (London), Allison Kudla (Seattle), Machine Project (Los Angeles), and Philip Ross (San Francisco). Preceded by a curator's talk by Andrea Grover at 5:30 p.m.
