Lecture | The Mill Girl Died While Working and the Patrician Angel Came: High Culture and Class Aspects of a Gilded–Age Monument

Lowell, Massachusetts was a starting place for the industrial Revolution—turning from artisan hand labor to machine production— and the young Yankee women crowding into the factories became as much the invention of modern times as the machinery itself. Earning real wages in a leap of independence and with community support, the worker flourished, as well as the employer. The picture changed when conditions in the mills worsened, and with the unequal class system surfacing, the Yankee women left. The new crop of workers—immigrants desperate for work—took their place. The pay was poor, the hours were long and the speedup was life-threatening. Factory workers, exploited but when pressed too hard were politically open to battle for better conditions. In this environment, a young woman sculptor, Evelyn Beatrice Longman, socialized into the Gilded Age hierarchy, was commissioned to envision a gravestone honoring a woman worker of the past. Living in the present, she relied on the conservative nature of sculpture to project by aesthetic means, in a program of beauty and spiritual experience, a visual complex of ideas. Lecturer Francine Tyler, a researcher in the Wertheim Study, is an art historian and an adjunct at New York University teaching art history and at Long Island University in Brooklyn teaching visual culture and the Core Seminar.

Discussion | The International Impact of Futurism: Absorptions, Assimilations, Adaptations

Between 1909 and 1925, Futurism became a catchphrase for a broadly felt desire for cultural renewal. The stream of manifestos published by FT Marinetti and his collaborators was quickly reaching other European countries and even continents much further afield. In the course of the past decades, a number of Futurism scholars have directed their attention to this ebb and flow of aesthetic concepts in the European and world-wide network of the avant-garde, but their studies tended to be focused either on individual artists or groups of artists, or on a small geographical unit. With Günter Berghaus.

Opening Reception | Digital Art: Nancy Burson's Composites

Since the inception of her career as an artist, Nancy Burson has been interested in the interaction of art and science. In collaboration with researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Burson began to produce computer-generated composite portraits in the late 1970s to early 1980s. The work was informed by centuries of social, scientific, and pseudo-scientific study of the human face. However, Burson’s attitude toward science was always laced with irony and a keen awareness of the absurdities embedded in many historic concepts, such as race and gender, which we take for granted today. Nancy Burson’s work is shown in museums and galleries worldwide, and has been included in major exhibitions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; the International Center of Photography, New York City; New Museum, New York City; Venice Biennale, Venice; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas; and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. “Seeing and Believing,” Burson’s traveling retrospective which originated at the Grey Art Gallery at New York University in New York City in 2002, was nominated for Best Solo Show of the Year in New York City by the International Association of Art Critics.

Gallery Talk | Return of the Native Son: George Morrison's Artistic Journey

Born and raised near the Grand Portage Indian Reservation in Minnesota, George Morrison (Chippewa) graduated from the Minnesota School of Art and the Art Students League in New York City. He became one of the first Native artists to exhibit his work extensively in New York City. Best known for his landscape paintings and wood collages, he developed a unique style that combined elements of cubism, surrealism, and abstract expressionism. Morrison returned to Minnesota in the 1970s, reconnecting with Chippewa culture and traditions, yet still adhering to his artistic identity as a modernist

Performance | Performance Art: Travis LeRoy Southworth's Boredernity: Part I of...

A riveting performance about boredom and space-shifting; artist Travis LeRoy Southworth will demonstrate the "slow dance" of labor in connection to his practice, which involves the wadding and mashing of imagery from periodicals into three-dimensional sculptures. For his installation in Distant Images, Local Positions, titled The Deep Empty, pages from National Geographic Magazine were reshaped into new stalactite-like growths that slowly reach down from a ceiling, eventually falling on the ground.

Lecture | Denis Roche, 'Rhythmisch'

Although the work of countless writers, artists and thinkers converged around “rhythm” in the 20th century—Kandinsky, Klee, Bergson, Benjamin, Bachelard, Lefebvre, Meschonnic, Barthes …—the ubiquity of this compact term belies a teeming mass of contradictory meanings and dubious transpositions. In its own evocations of “rhythm,” Denis Roche’s work steadily navigates the confluences of these rhythmic preoccupations, in the interstices of poetry and painting or those of prose, music and photography—but never promises to resolve their contradictions. Eschewing a single manifestation or total concept of rhythm, his hybrid creations tend instead to hone specific rhythms, thanks precisely to their calculated confrontations of distinct artistic media and always in light of a more fundamental, anthropological encounter with the real. Speaker Steven Crumb is a specialist of modern French poetry and poetics, and is presently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of French, where he earned his PhD in 2013.
