Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm until Feb. 14, 2017.

Film | Fred Kudjo Kuwornu's Blaxploitalian: 100 Years of Blackness in Italian Cinema (2016): Documentary Preview

BlaxploItalian is a diasporic, hybrid, critical, and cosmopolitan dimension documentary that uncovers the careers of a population of entertainers seldom heard from before: Black actors in Italian cinema starting from 1915 when the first black actor appeared in an Italian film. BlaxploItalian cleverly discloses the personal struggles classic Afro-Italian; African-American; Afro-Caribbean and African diasporic actors faced, correlating it with the contemporary actors who work diligently to find respectable and significant roles. Thus our alternative aim is for the stories in BlaxploItalian to serve as a call-to-action with the intention of challenging worldwide mainstream filmmakers and audiences into calling for an enhancement and practicing of ethnic and racial diversity in casting for important roles within the international film/media industries. Followed by a panel discussion with the director and special guests T.B.A.

Discussion | On Feminism: Our Bodies Online

This conversation will focus on how women wield images of their bodies online as a tool of power and/or as sexual objectification, exploring the question of who is allowed to use their body in this way. What are the implications of bodies imaging themselves online in the name of feminism? What are the rules of feminism now? Should there be boundaries and definitions? The conversation will be moderated by artist and writer Carmen Winant. Additional speakers to be announced. Carmen Winant (b. 1983, San Francisco) is an artist, writer, and professor of visual studies and contemporary art history at Columbus College of Art and Design. Winant received her BA from UCLA and masters degrees in critical studies and fine arts from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2011; in 2010, she was a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 2016, she had solo exhibitions at Skibum MacArthur (Los Angeles) and Fortnight Institute (New York), respectively titled Pictures of Women Working and Who Says Pain is Erotic?. Winant is a frequent contributor to Artforum.com, The Believer, Aperture, and Frieze. She is currently at work on an experimental book about the nature of practice.

Talk | TRADE, INVESTMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE UNDER THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION: WHAT LIES AHEAD?

Donald Trump came to office promising sweeping changes to the US’s traditional trade and investment policies. Such shifts on trade and investment could offer an opportunity to align these policies with action on climate change. On the other hand, Trump’s priorities, particularly with respect to developing domestic fossil fuels, signal that trade policies will head in the opposite direction. This panel will discuss how trade and investment policy may be reconciled with climate change imperatives and commitments, the trade risks the Trump administration’s climate policies present, and how the United States Trade Representative might approach these issues in new trade and investment (re)negotiations. This event is co-organized with the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law and the Environmental Law Society at Columbia Law School. Moderator: Michael Gerrard, Director, Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Columbia Law School Panelists: Ben Beachy, Senior Policy Advisor, Responsible Trade Program, Sierra Club Silvia Maciunas, Senior Research Fellow, Center for International Governance Innovation Dalindyebo Shabalala, Visiting Assistant Professor, Case Western Reserve University, School of Law, and Director of the Institute on Traditional Knowledge and Intellectual Property
