Author Reading | Other Russias: Victoria Lomasko's Graphic Journalism

A talk with graphic reportage artist Victoria Lomasko about her new collection, an anthology of her work from 2009 to 2016, Other Russias (n+1, 2016). Bela Shayevich, translator of Svetlana Alexievich's Secondhand Time, will translate. Victoria Lomasko is a fixture at Moscow's trials and protests, documenting the tumultuous processes that shape today's Russia. Not content to limit herself to the political life of the country's capital, Lomasko travels around the country and through the former Soviet republics, exploring the domestic, psychological, and spiritual condition of its diverse marginalized groups. Sex workers in Nizhny Novgorod, women in underground lesbian clubs, teachers in a remote village school, and children at the juvenile prison colonies where Lomasko volunteers as an art teacher have been some of the subjects of her sensitive, incisive portraits.

Author Reading | Legendary folk singer Judy Collins discusses her book Cravings

Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her 50-album body of work and heed inspiration from the spiritual discipline that has helped her to thrive in the music industry for half a century. The award-winning singer-songwriter’s rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, Wildflowers, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, won Song of the Year at the 1975 Grammy Awards. Her most recent book, Cravings, is a no-holds-barred account of her decades-long struggle with compulsive overeating and of the journey that led her to a solution. Alternating between chapters on her life and those of the many diet gurus she has encountered along the way (Atkins, Jean Nidetch of Weight Watchers, Andrew Weil, to name a few), the book is the culmination of Judy’s genuine desire to share what she’s learned—so that no one else has to navigate her heart-rending path to recovery.

Lecture | The Untold Story of Design Thinking

"Design thinking" has wormed its way into fields ranging from heavy manufacturing to high technology. But how was design thinking invented? So far, the story has been incomplete, muddled or, even worse, boring. In this talk, presented by MA Design Research, Writing and Criticism, award-winning design journalist Cliff Kuang will read a chapter from his book User Friendly, which is forthcoming from Farrar, Strauss, and Giroux. He will reveal a largely forgotten history, involving the terrors of Communism and the hippie idealism of 1960s California. Speaker Cliff Kuang is the head of digital product at Fast Company, where he works on UX and product strategy. Previously, he was design editor at both WIRED and Fast Company, where he was founding editor of its influential spinoff site, Co.Design. In the course of his 10-year career covering design and technology, he has edited or written over 5,000 articles.

Talk | Seeing the Light: A Photography Presentation

Every artist works in a preferred medium and as photographers, their medium is light. For them, the awareness and control of highlights and shadows creates the illusion of depth in two-dimensional images. Light has several variables that they also must take into consideration when capturing images. These include light’s direction, intensity, color temperature and quality. A professional can see the light, determine if it is ideal for the task at hand and then modify or substitute the source to create the perfect image. This presentation by photographer Paul Bernstein is designed to raise your ability to see the light, select the correct photographic tools and utilize the proper lighting techniques to create three-dimensional portraits, candids, scenics or still life images every time you press the shutter. The content is applicable to those at every level of photographic experience, as light is our common denominator. Paul Bernstein has been a professional photographer for over 40 years, during which time he has photographed over 2500 social functions, many theatrical events and countless portrait sessions. He is a master of lighting and posing, as well as candid photography.
