Film | Greyhound (2020): Tom Hanks in WWII Drama (virtual, streaming for 24 hours)

In the winter of 1942, as Nazi forces march across Europe with their sights set on Great Britain, thousands of ships from North America transport men and material across the Atlantic. Passed over for promotion for years, longtime U.S. Navy officer Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks, who also penned the screenplay) finally receives his first command: leading the destroyer Keeling (code-named Greyhound), and three other escort ships to protect a convoy of 37 merchant vessels. Fast-moving German submarines known as U-boats patrol the waters, brutally enforcing a German blockade. Although the convoy receives anti-submarine air cover when within flying range of American and British air force bases, for a terrifying five-day stretch known as the "Black Pit," Krause and his men are on their own against U-boats determined to sink the destroyer and the ships it is assigned to protect. Directed by Oscar winner Aaron Schneider. Discussion with the director, Tom Hanks and others takes place on Feb 12, 9 pm (listed on our website; separate registration required).

Discussion | The White Tiger (2021): Rags-to-Riches Tale, Writer-Director in Conversation (virtual)

The White Tiger has been hailed as a brilliant cinematic adaptation of the Booker Prize-winning novel by Aravind Adiga. Netflix (currently streaming the film) describes it as an "epic journey of a poor Indian driver (Adarsh Gourav) who uses his wit and cunning to break free from servitude to his rich masters (Rajkummar Rao and Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and rise to the top of the heap." Moderator Annette Insdorf will interview Ramin Bahrani -- a filmmaker hailed by Roger Ebert in 2009 as "the new great American director" -- live and she will include audience questions. Bahrani's previous films, including 99 Homes (2014), Fahrenheit 451 (2018), Man Push Cart (05), established him as a leading artist of American independent cinema. He is a professor of film directing at Columbia University's School of the Arts.
