Mark Morris created Dido and Aeneas as a danced opera to Henry Purcell's score in 1989, when he was Director of Dance at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. The film captured Mark Morris in his critically acclaimed role of Dido and brought the work's dance sequences to motion picture and television audiences. Film directed by Barbara Willis Sweete, who had previously worked with the Mark Morris Dance Group on the Emmy-award-winning film Falling Down Stairs.
