Book Discussion | Arrested Development: The Soviet Union in Ghana, Guinea, and Mali, 1955-1968 (in-person and online)

Alessandro Iandolo's book examines the USSR’s involvement in West Africa during the 1950s and 1960s as aid donor, trade partner, and political inspiration for the first post-independence governments in Ghana, Guinea, and Mali. Buoyed by solid economic performance in the 1950s, the USSR opened itself up to the world and launched a series of programs aimed at supporting the search for economic development in newly independent countries in Africa and Asia. These countries, emerging from decades of colonial domination, looked at the USSR as an example to strengthen political and economic independence. Based on extensive research in Russian and West African archives, Arrested Development explores the ideas that guided Soviet engagement in West Africa, investigates the projects that the USSR sponsored “on the ground,” and analyzes their implementation and legacy. The exchanges and clashes born out of the encounter between Soviet and West African ideas, ambitions, and hopes about development reveal the USSR as a central actor in the history of economic development in the twentieth century.

Book Club | Dignity, Solidarity, and the Penal Colony by Edward Said

This essay is thought to be Edward Said’s final piece of writing, first posted the day after his death (9/24/2003) and eventually published in the edited volume The Politics of Anti-Semitism. Within the essay, Said reflects not only on his own illness and mortality but also on the then contemporaneous bombing of Gaza—as well the complicity of intellectuals in what Said already understood to be an ongoing genocide and the discursive formations that enable such complicity and violence.

Book Discussion | Rebel Music: Bob Marley & Roots Reggae

Kate Simon launches her new book, a tribute to one of the greatest legends in world music, Bob Marley. In 1975, Kate Simon first photographed Bob Marley and the Wailers at the Lyceum in London, where the now-legendary live performance of 'No Woman No Cry' was recorded. They then collaborated throughout the Seventies, with Simon shooting some of the most intimate, enduring and emblematic images ever taken of Marley, including his iconic Kaya album cover. Simon captured it all: portraits of the reggae greats of the Seventies, such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh; the Exodus Tour, on the road with Bob Marley and The Wailers as they performed across Europe; and the One Love Peace Concert, where Bob famously united Jamaica's opposing political leaders. Ultimately, in 1981, Simon would ride with the funeral cortege from Kingston to St Ann and Bob Marley's final resting place. Rebel Music contains over 400 photographs from Simon's archives, many published here for the first time. Introduced by Patti Smith, with a foreword by Lenny Kravitz and afterword by Keith Richards, a cast of 24 contributors join Simon in sharing the stories behind the images, including ex-Wailers guitarist Junior Marvin and bass player and band leader Aston 'Family Man' Barrett; musicians such as Junior Delgado, Steve Jordan, Paul Simonon and Bruce Springsteen; filmmaker Don Letts and producer Danny Sims; and Island Records founder, Chris Blackwell.
