Opening Reception | explore the tension between the human body and today’s increasingly advanced technological society

An exhibition of group of artists whose works explore the tension between the human body and today’s increasingly advanced technological society. The Canadian artist, Simone Jones, will exhibit Perfect Vehicle, a car with bicycle-like wheels that contains sensors that monitor the occupant’s breathing to control its speed. A video records its test run on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The collaborative team of Max Dean/Raffaello D’Andrea/Matt Donovan, also from Canada, will display The Robotic Chair – a generic-looking wooden chair with the capacity to fall apart and put itself back together, a cycle of destruction and creation. The Boston-based, computer-trained artist, Brian Knep will exhibit videos that depict microscopic views of worms and the figures of a man and a woman from the Pioneer Plaque, which was developed by NASA to send a message into space if intercepted by extraterrestrials.

Opening Reception | Group Show: Vertically Integrated Manufacturing

Taking as its starting point Jacques Rancière’s observation that “artistic practice is not the outside of work, but rather its displaced form of visibility,” the works in this show put their own conditions of production on display, responding to and perhaps even anticipating changing processes of labor. With: Francis Alÿs, Carl Andre, Fia Backström, Bernd & Hilla Becher, DAS INSTITUT, Dexter Sinister, Douglas Huebler, Allan McCollum, and Stephen Prina.

Opening Reception | Sculpture/New Media Project: Nivi Alroy & Shirley Shor's Pixelville

A collaborative project of the sculptor Alroy and new media artist Shor. As Israeli women close in age, Alroy and Shor share many experiences and observations, but discovered their common aesthetic and social purpose only recently, once both had relocated to New York. The title derives in part from the responsiveness of the concept to the exhibition gallery, a century-old space and part of a still-older complex known as “Gairville.” As with so many buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn reclaimed by and for artists, the historic resonance of the space evokes, and provokes, artists’ Janus-headed sensitivity to the layering of past, present, and future in the urban context. In the case of Alroy and Shor, this compression of time symptomatizes the anomalous dynamics of our era, the digital, or at least digitized, world that compresses time and space alike, and does so as much through the reordering of experience as through the mere reduction of volume or duration.

Opening Reception | Group Show: New Mirrors: Painting in a Transparent World

New Mirrors surveys the state of current painting through the work of seven New York-based artists whose varied directions include TV-still realism, found abstract minimalism, and points in between. In particular, this exhibition positions painting as a way of thinking about perception in the age of digitization, information and instantaneity – elements of contemporary life that create an increasingly transparent world. Artists: Kadar Brock, Jesse Chapman, Mira Dancy, Benin Ford, Alison Fox, Andy Piedilato, and Julia San Martin.

Opening Reception | Public Art Project: Waterpod: Autonomy and Ecology

Waterpod: Autonomy and Ecology, the sixth exhibition of the SEA (Social Envrionmental Aesthetics) program, is a survey of the Waterpod's five-month voyage around the boroughs of New York. It includes videos, photographs, relics, art works, journal entries, and ephemera that tell the story of this unusual public art project. The Waterpod was a floating, sculptural structure designed as a futuristic habitat and an experimental platform for assessing the design and efficacy of living systems fashioned to create an autonomous, fully functional marine shelter. A New York-based multinational team, led by founder and artistic director Mary Mattingly, drew upon the talents of artists, designers, builders, civic activists, scientists, environmentalists, and marine engineers to bring this cross-disciplinary collaboration to fruition in the waterways of New York City. During a global recession and within strict government guidelines, the Waterpod managed to achieve new ways of community outreach, resource sharing, and art creation. To fortify against the possibility of widespread climate change, desertification, overpopulation, and rising sea levels, the Waterpod offered a pathway to sustainable survival, mobility, and community building through a free, participatory project and event space that visited the five boroughs and Governors Island, for a voyage lasting from June to October 2009. The Waterpod’s mission has been to prepare, inform, and offer alternatives to current and future living spaces.
