Performance | Performance Art: This Fable Is Intended for You: A Work-Energy Principle

This Fable is Intended for You: A Work-Energy Principle is a public project that amplifies the human presence and connections of people who live and work in Lower Manhattan. The project involves a public residency, a working exhibition and a series of performances. The residency and the exhibition act as animated sites of production as well as social sites of interaction. At these sites the methods of making are choreographed and on display. Material contributions by audience members will shift and affect the outcome of the work being created. The culmination of the residency and exhibition is a series of performances where the objects made during the residency and on display within the exhibition become the materials that intertwine 24 people in an evolving set of temporary geometric sculptural shapes.

Gallery Talk | Artists Nivi Alroy and Shirley Shor discuss their show Pixelville

Pizelville is a collaborative project of the sculptor Alroy and new media artist Shor. As Israeli women close in age, Alroy and Shor share many experiences and observations, but discovered their common aesthetic and social purpose only recently, once both had relocated to New York. The title derives in part from the responsiveness of the concept to the exhibition gallery, a century-old space and part of a still-older complex known as “Gairville.” As with so many buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn reclaimed by and for artists, the historic resonance of the space evokes, and provokes, artists’ Janus-headed sensitivity to the layering of past, present, and future in the urban context. In the case of Alroy and Shor, this compression of time symptomatizes the anomalous dynamics of our era, the digital, or at least digitized, world that compresses time and space alike, and does so as much through the reordering of experience as through the mere reduction of volume or duration.

Graubard’s photographic work circles issues of identity and biography, fusing the politics of her subjects with her feelings of vulnerability and fascination with the violent and unfamiliar. Her subjects are people she met in the course of wandering through different countries and social realms -– some are chance encounters with strangers, some are people she has known. She lived in Prague for three years and traveled to different countries within the area including Russia and former Yugoslavia, providing her with a wealth of imagery.
