Opening Reception | Exhibition: Carl Johan De Geer and the Swedish Underground 1964-1971

A Swedish artist, writer, musician and friherre (baron) of the De Geer noble family, De Geer grew up in a castle in Skåne. He broke with his bourgeois background and became a leftist artist, and studied at Konstfack, University College of Art, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He also exposed his grandmother's Nazi sympathies in a film called Mormor, Hitler och jag (Grandmother, Hitler and I). Most radical and provoking at that time was his 1967 painting of a burning Swedish flag with the words "kuken" ("cock") and "Skända flaggan" ("dishonour the flag") written on it. The painting was shown in an art gallery, but was immediately apprehended by the police. De Geer has written a number of books and was also a member of the Swedish radical prog-band Blå Tåget.

Book Discussion | Richard Yates' Novel Revolutionary Road: Americans Unfulfilled

April and Frank Wheeler are a young, ostensibly thriving couple living with their two children in a prosperous Connecticut suburb in the mid-1950s. However, the self-assured exterior masks a creeping frustration at their inability to feel fulfilled in their relationships or careers. Frank is mired in a well-paying but boring office job and April is a housewife still mourning the demise of her hoped-for acting career. Determined to identify themselves as superior to the mediocre sprawl of suburbanites who surround them, they decide to move to France where they will be better able to develop their true artistic sensibilities, free of the consumerist demands of capitalist America. As their relationship deteriorates, their trip and their dreams of self-fulfillment are thrown into jeopardy.

Concert | Works for trumpet and piano by duo Franz Hautzinger and Manon-Liu Winter

In the first act, they will play their compositions, which mix elements of jazz and contemporary classical composition. New York cellist Alex Waterman as well as musician and composer Gene Coleman will join them as special guests in the second set. Manon-Liu Winter began her career as a soloist and chamber musician. Shifting her focus to contemporary music and free improvisation led her to a period of intense experimentation with the instrument for expanding the piano sound and technical capabilities - various preparations, string piano, the inside/outside of the corpus, ways of amplifying. Franz Hautzinger studied at the Jazz department of today’s Art University in Graz from 1981 to 1983 until lip palsy forced him to take a six-year break from trumpeting. In 1989, he started to explore the trumpet in his very own and un-academic way. The conscious decision to avoid electronic sound sources but to still comprehend the development of digital music on the trumpet were decisive stages for the creation of Franz Hautzinger’s solo trumpet CD Gomberg (2000) on which he presented this new until then unheard cosmos of sound that he had developed on his instrument and with which he positioned himself at the front line of the international improvisation avant-garde.
