Opening Reception | 2 Shows: Iannis Xenakis: Composer, Architect, Visionary / Selections Spring 2010: Sea Marks

Iannis Xenakis: Composer, Architect, Visionary explores the fundamental role of drawing in the work of avant-garde composer Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001). One of the most important figures in late twentieth-century music, Xenakis originally trained as an engineer and was also known as an architect, developing iconic designs while working with Le Corbusier in the 1950s. This premiere presentation of Xenakis’s visual work in North America is comprised of samples of his pioneering graphic notation, architectural plans, compelling preparatory mathematical renderings, and pre-compositional sketches—in all, nearly 100 documents created between 1953 and 1984. Selections Spring 2010: Sea Marks comprises the works of Agnes Barley, Jerome Marshak, and Peter Matthews, three artists who notate, describe, and interpret aspects of the sea. Sea Marks takes a personal facet of Iannis Xenakis’s life as its starting point; beginning in the early 1950s, Xenakis and his family vacationed on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, where they camped and kayaked. Just as Xenakis used drawing to configure and materialize his ideas, the artists have invented personal and abstract drawing languages to translate the sea.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Christian Hellmich's The Array/Transfer-Domino

Returning for his second solo exhibition in New York is German artist Hellmich. As Hellmich's previous works depict definitions between an interior and an exterior, viewers will find in this second exhibition a broadening of these definitions. The role of architecture remains a focal point of Hellmich's subject matter, though a myriad of topics and imagery flow throughout the works. Hellmich was born in 1977 in Düsseldorf, Germany. For Hellmich, painting is an exercise in taxonomy rather than storytelling. His buildings and landscapes emphasize texture, form and geometry, with a rigorous investment in the materiality of his surfaces.

Opening Reception | Three-Part Group Show: Enigmatic Perspectives / Interpretive Realms / Labyrinth of Abstraction

In a language as timeless as expression itself, the artists collected in Enigmatic Perspectives speak to our innermost spirits. Instinctive by design, these powerful yet meditative tableaus arise from deep within each artist, allowing for personal interpretations from each viewer. Inventive and spontaneous, the mind of each artist is a world unto itself and they are compelled towards the act of creation. Within Interpretive Realms audiences may observe the sheer endless forms of inspiration within our grasp. Consumerism, spirituality, showmanship, and natural splendor become the muse for the talented individuals collected here, as they take us on a journey into the world as seen through their eyes. If abstraction is the casting aside of realistic conventions, then Labyrinth of Abstraction are the incredible results provided by that artistic freedom. These artists are finding their own voice within the endless possibilities, and we are treated with wonderfully inventive images that speak to us on a plane just beyond the effable. Featured Artists: Randy Colbath, Marianne Fernandez, Steven Glatt, Szczepan Pako, Jutta Rakoniewski, Alyssa Traub, Lushana Watson, Eva Bouzard-Hui, Aga Cela, Thomas de Marsay, Amanda Dunbar, Rania Mesiskli, Brian Pier, Ron EA Powell - REAP13, Seung Baick, Jack Cymber, Ivanka Dukic, Magda Hogh, Andrej Krivda, Ernest Villarreal.

Lecture | A Journey of Her Peers: Women Writers

Believing that we must fully integrate the contribution of women into our American literary heritage, acclaimed author Elaine Showalter gives a talk based on her recent book A Journey of Her Peers. The fascinating narrative features more than 250 female writers. These include not only famous and expected names (Harriet Beecher Stowe, Willa Cather, Dorothy Parker, Flannery O’Connor, Gwendolyn Brooks, Grace Paley, Toni Morrison, and Jodi Picoult, to name a few), but also many who were once successful and acclaimed yet now are little known such as Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Susan Glaspell. Showalter shows how these writers--both the enduring stars and the ones left behind by the canon--were connected to one another and to their times. Showalter is an award-winning literary critic, feminist and writer on cultural and social issues. She is one of the founders of feminist literary criticism in United States academia who coined the term “Gynocriticism,” the historical study of women writers as a distinct literary tradition, in her essay “Toward a Feminist Poetics.” Showalter's best known works are Toward a Feminist Poetics, The Female Malady: Women, Madness, and English Culture, Sexual Anarchy: Gender at Culture at the Fin de Siecle, Hystories: Hysterical Epidemics and Modern Media, and Inventing Herself: Claiming a Feminist Intellectual Heritage. In 2007, Showalter was chair of the judges for the prestigious British literary award, the Man Booker International Prize.
