3-4 miles, moderate pace, city streets. Look at public schools in the East Village designed by C. B. J. Snyder during his 31-year career from 1891 to 1923 as Superintendent of School Buildings. Then have a half-hour for lunch or go to the Union Square green market. And at 1:00 PM, those who wish can go to a free Metropolitan Opera simulcast of Bizet's Carmen at the Washington Irving High School auditorium.

City Walk | Prospect Park-to-Chinatown Walk


7 miles, slow to moderate pace, flat hike. From Ft. Hamilton Parkway around the perimeter of Prospect Park to Grand Army Plaza, then down Union Street to Court Street. Down Court Street across the Brooklyn Bridge to Chinatown. You will eat at a Vietnamese restaurant. This is a casual and relaxing hike. No macho or super hikers need apply. Heavy rain cancels.

Screening | The Rusyn Experience in Film


The Carpatho-Rusyn Society of New York cordially invites you to attend a showing of two short films on the Rusyn experience, Jakub and Murder Ballads and Legends from Ladomirova. A discussion will follow each film where viewers have the opportunity to make comments and ask questions. Jana Sevcikova's Jakub (1992) is a documentary film about Rusyns who lived in the Maramuresh area of northern Romania and were asked by the Czechoslovak government to relocate to the Sudeten area of western Bohemia after World War II. The film focuses of the recollections by members of the community of an unusual character name Jakub. In the process the viewer learns more about the community than Jakub. The film is notable for its beautiful camera work showing aspects of Rusyn life at the time. 65 min. In Rusyn and Czech with English subtitles. Peter Kerekes' Murder Ballads and Legends from Ladomirova (1988) is a film of eight remembrances of past events occurring in Ladomirova spanning from World War I to the collectivization process after World War II. Ladomirova is a town located in the Svidnik District of northeast Slovakia. While some memories were joyful others were scarred by the past events which took place in the community. 54 min. In Rusyn and Slovak with English subtitles.

Gallery Talk | Tour of Iannis Xenakis: Composer, Architect, Visionary Exhibition


Curators Sharon Kanach and Carey Lovelace walk you thought this show that explores the fundamental role of drawing in the work of Greek avant-garde composer Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001). A leading figure in twentieth century music, Xenakis was trained as a civil engineer, then became an architect and developed revolutionary designs while working with Le Corbusier. Comprised of over 60 documents created between 1953 and 1984, this will be the first North American exhibition dedicated to Xenakis’s original works on paper. Included will be rarely-seen hand-rendered scores, architectural drawings, conceptual renderings, pre-compositional sketches, and graphic scores.
