Author Reading | Translator Robert Chandler reads Vasily Grossman’s Everything Flows

A reading by Chandler of his new translation of Grossman's last novel. Few novels confront human suffering on as massive a scale as this one. After his release into post-Stalinist Russia, Ivan Grigoryevich finds that the 30 years he spent in Stalin's forced labor camps have wreaked terrible changes in himself and in Soviet society. He goes first to his cousin's Moscow apartment, but he and his wife are preoccupied with petty successes secured by cooperation with a state-sanctioned campaign of anti-Semitism. Ivan then travels to Leningrad, where he finds work in a metal shop and rents a room from a widow who falls in love with him and shares stories from her past (most notably the forced collectivization of Ukrainian farms), providing a counterbalance to Ivan's experiences in Siberia. Suffering is everywhere, but Grossman finds no glory or redemption in it, and just when you think things can't get bleaker, he offers up a new vignette that sinks deeper into misery, though there is a glimmer of hope toward the end. The prose is rough in spots, but Grossman's individual by individual portrayal of anguish gives readers a heartrending glimpse of the incomprehensible.

Opening Reception | Alumni Show: Rites of Passage

What is the path of creativity in the 21st century? This exhibition an exhibition explores the routes taken by recent alumni. Many of the 37 works, which are teeming with imagination and invention, were created expressly for the exhibition and include first time collaborations between artists and engineers. The full spectrum of contemporary practices are represented including sound, text, architectural intervention, performance, video, photography, drawing, painting and sculpture. Avenues of expression range from the intangibility of light and sound to the poetry of infrastructure. The work of composer/scientist Salman Bakht, architect David A. Ross and artists Josephine Halvorson, Ryan & Trevor Oakes, and Kim Holleman, to name a few, evoke a new romanticism and a return to sincerity and real emotion—which can blur the lines between the arts and sciences.

The naturally warm interior is designed for relaxation or even an overnight stay; a guest can rest his/her upper body on the mattress and pillow inside, while stretching their legs outside the box. Lecture | The Late Copper Age in the East Balkans and the Case of Varna

Vladimir Slavchev of the Varna Regional Museum of History lectures. The Varna Necropolis, a cemetery that lies in the western industrial zone of Varna, Bulgaria, is one of the premiere archaeological sites in the world for the research of world pre-history. The massive interest in this cemetery is due to the abundance and variety of objects recovered from its graves, namely gold artifacts. Dr. Slavchev will discuss these grave goods (and the necropolis from which they came) in relation to Varna culture as a whole. The presence of artifacts in a wide range of materials at the cemetery, one of the burial sites of the highly-developed local community that inhabited the shore of Varna Bay at the time, suggests that the community was part of a developed network of medium and long range trading, transport and distribution of prestige items. Dr. Slavchev will argue that the local manufacturing of goods was predominantly aimed at the local community and its needs. Therefore, such prestige items could have functioned as gifts for exchange with neighboring cultures or as goods to be sold in the trading network.

Author Reading | Isabelle Graw discusses her book High Price: Art between the Market and Celebrity Culture

Today the art world is not dominated by a small group of insiders. According to Graw, the art economy has been transformed from a retail business into an industry that produces visuality and meaning. This book questions the assumption that there is a dichotomy between art and the market and rejects the notion that market value is equal to artistic value. Graw examines the intrinsic connection between artistic production and its market conditions while insisting that art is a commodity of a special kind. High Price claims that art and the market have to escape each other precisely because they are so deeply entangled.
