Slide Lecture | Shakespeare's Keyboard

William Shakespeare was neither a Mac nor a PC. But he was familiar with the keyboard, and, more importantly, with the principles behind the keyboard. In this illustrated lecture, English Professor John Michael Archer will read a few sonnets by Shakespeare in light of the Renaissance printing house, musical instruments, and the role of repetition in poetic language. His lecture will provoke key questions concerning technology and its relation to poetry. Can technology be reduced to machinery? Do technological principles take precedence over technical objects? Is poetic language technological in principle because it is a form of making or creation, or is it opposed to technology? Can Shakespeare help us decide if there is a choice here, and to decide what choice to make as we think about technology

Author Reading | Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen discusses his book The Idea of Justice

The transcendental theory of justice, the subject of Sen’s analysis, flourished in the Enlightenment and has proponents among some of the most distinguished philosophers of our day; it is concerned with identifying perfectly just social arrangements, defining the nature of the perfectly just society. The approach Sen favors, on the other hand, focuses on the comparative judgments of what is “more” or “less” just, and on the comparative merits of the different societies that actually emerge from certain institutions and social interactions.

Screening | Romanian Cinema: Stere Gulea's The Journey (1987)

A remarkable adaptation of Marin Preda’s novel. The action unfolds in the years preceding World War II. Central to it is a village in the Danube Plain, with its complex life, visible and invisible clashes between people, between individuals and various groups, with the villagers’ constant preoccupation for more wealth, in a context of early consolidation of capitalism in the rural area. Against the background of a social shift – which will prove irreversible – the film follows the break-up of a traditional peasant family. 151 min. In Romanian with English subtitles.
