Discussion | Mussolini’s Camps: The Internment of Jewish Civilians in Fascist Italy

Part of a series called Jews in Italy During the Holocaust presented by The Primo Levi Center and the Italian Cultural Institute, the illuminating documentary The Jews from Fossoli exposes the Italian Social Republic’s 1943 deportation of all Jews residing in Italy and the subsequent establishment of a concentration camp in Fossoli. At 3pm, hear a discussion with author Carlo Spartaco Capogreco (The Duce’s Camps) and Doris Schechter, hidden as a child with her family in Italy and proprietor of My Most Favorite Food; moderated by Alessandro Cassin. This panel will examine the unique situations of Jews in Italy during the Holocaust. From 1938 to 1943, civilian internment camps were established to segregate Italian Jews and foreign Jews living in Italy. While there were many cases in which local populations showed great empathy, others did not hesitate to give up their Jewish neighbors to the Italian Fascists or Nazis.

This film is a portrait of the self-taught artist Emile Norman, who recently passed away at age 91, working until the end with the same passion for life, art, nature and freedom that inspired him through seven decades of a changing art scene. The film tells the story of Norman’s independent spirit and how it developed from his early days on a walnut ranch in the San Gabriel Valley of California and brought him success in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. This independent spirit later gave him the confidence to leave the New York art scene and find freedom in Big Sur where he built a house and created a haven for a circle of friends that still exists today. The film shows Norman’s work glittering in Bergdorf Goodman’s windows, on chorus girls’ headdresses in the Fred Astaire movie Blue Skies, and winning rave reviews at New York gallery shows. It moves with him to the Big Sur area of California as he continued to develop his talents. After the screening, co-producers (and
