Lecture | The Intelligencers: George Washington, Espionage, and the Culper Ring in Revolutionary New York

Washington's private spy network, known as the Culper Ring, operated for much of the War of Independence in New York and on Long Island. Using the Culper Ring's own enciphered reports and correspondence, Alexander Rose discusses its creation and operations, its successes and its failures, and the spies' personal rivalries and friendships, to expose the secret underworld of the American Revolution. The tradecraft of early espionage was wholly alien to modern forms of intelligence-gathering, yet the example of the Culper Ring provides a rare warts-and-all glimpse into the lives of ordinary men who performed extraordinary deeds. Also covered will be Washington's role as spymaster. As the Culper Ring's confessor, summoner, and almoner, Washington's remarkable aptitude and appetite for intelligence work ensured not only that he told a lie, but that he told a great many. Writer-in-Residence at the Library's Allen Room, Alexander Rose is an historian and the author of Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring, American Rifle: A Biography and Kings in the North: The House of Percy in British History, 1066-1485.

Welcome in a new year of art with this exhibition featuring artists whose subject matter is the art world. Organized by "bootleg" artist Eric Doeringer, I Like the Art World and the Art World Likes Me explores the fraught relationship between emerging artists and the established art world. Artists: Conrad Bakker, Marc Bijl, Jennifer Dalton, Eric Doeringer, Nancy Drew, Bill Drummond, Alex Gingrow, Grennan & Sperandio, Aneta Grzeszykowska, Charles Gute, Nate Harrison, Pablo Helguera, Dan Levenson/Little Switzerland, The Matthew Higgs Society, Loren Munk, Filip Noterdaeme, Laurina Paperina, William Powhida, Ward Shelley, and Jade Townsend.

Opening Reception | Photography: Linda Salerno: Selections from the Black Mirror Series

In her Black Mirror Series of experimental large-scale photographs, Salerno creates a sensual journey through a visionary landscape. Her own self-portrait figure guides the viewer through a lush terrain of dream and memory. A complex blending of painting and photography techniques, these images have less in common with the photographic self-portrait tradition of Claude Cahun and Cindy Sherman that emphasizes identity and women’s roles, than with the cinematic precedent of Maya Deren, which ventures into ritual and the unconscious. First of all, the self-portrait figures are not frontal; they are mostly seen from the back or side, as the protagonist leads us through an enigmatic world of metamorphosis, down pathways through foliage or across a terrain shared by fish. With her long hair and full skirt, she is an alluring figure, a spirit to follow in a trance-like state.

What happens when a Ghanaian kid hears Public Enemy for the first time and gets inspired? The answer, to be precise, is hip-hop artist Blitz the Ambassador.
