A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation -- the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other’s echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.

Slide Lecture | Holdouts! The Buildings That Got in the Way

With Andrew Alpern, architectural historian, architect, and attorney. Visible holdouts are old buildings that get in the way of new buildings. But behind every holdout building is a human being. He or she (and they seem to be about evenly divided) may be frightened, greedy, rebellious, nursing a grudge, or sometimes totally irrational. There are almost as many different stories behind holdouts in New York as there are holdouts. They can be the bane of a real estate developer’s existence, but it is not always clear who is David and who is Goliath. In this illustrated lecture, the author will tell us about some of the colorful personalities and outrageous actions that emerge from these stark confrontations, and the sometimes hectic, sometimes pathetic, and sometimes hilarious struggles that result.

Author Reading | Jeannette Seaver reads from her husband Richard Seaver's book The Tender Hour of Twilight

Join us for an evening of tribute to legendary editor, translator and publisher, Richard Seaver. Richard Seaver’s memoir is a stirring reminder of the passion, the vitality, and even the glamor of a true life in literature. The book follows Seaver from Paris in the 1950s, where he discovered Samuel Beckett, to New York in the 1960s, when he was a top editor at Grove Press. Grove, led by publisher Barney Rosset, published books with content that challenged censorship laws— including William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch, with its raw depictions of drug use and homosexuality; Henry Miller's semi-autobiographical chronicles of lust Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn; and the French erotic novel The Story of O, written under a pseudonym.

Performance | Performance Art: Roberta Lima's Displacement

Displacement refers to Brazilian artist Roberta Lima’s ongoing process of interweaving her experiences as an architect and as a performer. As an architect she was trained to provide safety and the idea of shelter, and as a performer she was given the chance to experiment with the opposite: the idea of instability. Lima touches on many themes such as gender and bio-politics, and makes use of different elements to debate the concept of displacement. This one-night-only performance and installation will include a talk by Austrian curator and art historian Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein Roberta Lima was born in 1974 in Manaus, Brazil. After graduating with a degree in architecture in 2002, she moved to Europe where she now lives. In 2007, after earning a Master's degree in Fine Arts, she began her PhD studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Lima focuses on her own body and uses various media, such as photographs, video and installations. Additionally, she investigates space and appropriates aspects of different places and contexts – from subculture to science, from popular media to historical reference and feminist theory – for producing art and starting discussions on the role of artist and viewer. In 2008, she collaborated with Dorit Margreiter on “SynChroniCity”, the Austrian contribution at the 11th International Cairo Biennal, which was curated by Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein.
