Gallery Talk | Gallery Tour: Romare Bearden: A Black Odyssey

In 1977, Romare Bearden (1911-1988) created a cycle of 20 collages and watercolors (miniature variations of his collages) based on Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Rich in symbolism and allegorical content, Bearden’s “Odysseus Series” created an artistic bridge between classical mythology and African-American culture. The works conveyed a sense of timelessness and the universality of the human condition, but their brilliance was displayed for only two months in New York City before being scattered to private collections and public art museums.

Lecture | Battle of the Bishops: A Slavery Controversy in Pennsylvania in 1863

In 1861, Bishop John Henry Hopkins of Vermont had written a pamphlet defending slavery based upon his interpretation of the Bible. Hopkins gave his consent to a request to have this pamphlet circulated throughout the Diocese of Pennsylvania in 1863. That distribution outraged Pennsylvania Bishop Alonzo Potter and many of his clergy, both because they disagreed with Hopkins on the issue of slavery and because the document was circulated in their diocese without their consent or even prior knowledge. A public uproar ensued, and there were vitriolic exchanges of communication that resulted in the alienation of the two bishops from each other. This incident and its context and consequences are the subject of this lecture. Speaker T. Felder Dorn, a writer in residence in the Library’s Wertheim Study, is a graduate of Duke University and holds the Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Washington.

Opening Reception | Djordje Ozbolt. More paintings about poets and food

The gallery's first New York exhibition devoted to internationally admired Belgrade-born London-based artist Djordje Ozbolt. Ozbolt is a voracious traveller and exoticist whose work wistfully ransacks cultures, traditions, curiosities, and epochs. Collapsing the narratives of his paintings and sculptures into solitary images, Ozbolt creates mysterious and often macabre imagery that persistently conflates traditional European genres – of portraiture, still life, landscape, and history painting – with motifs sourced from Christianity, African and Asian art, and cultural stereotypes, all overlaid with the artist's signature sharp wit.
